J M Barrie's Birthplace
About the property
Kirriemuir in Angus is a fantastic family day out. Where else can play as being Peter Pan, bump into a crocodile in the garden and gaze into a magic mirror on a hill all in one day? J.M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, is one of Angus’ most famous sons. The author was born in Kirriemuir 150 years ago and thanks to the efforts of the National Trust for Scotland you can visit the cottage where Barrie grew up and enjoy a brand new exhibition celebrating his life and works. Stepping through the front door is like walking into Neverland. There are many fascinating items including costumes and manuscripts and some rooms look exactly like they would have done over a century ago when Barrie lived there. The new exhibition also provides a fascinating insight into Barrie, and shows how some of his earliest childhood memories inspired some of his greatest works. Kids can play at being Peter Pan and Tinkerbell in the Peter Pan Playroom, or try and spot characters from the famous play hidden around the house. But watch out for the willow crocodile in the Peter Pan garden! Also not to be missed is Barrie’s first theatre, the washhouse outside his birth place. The Tayroots Pass Visitor Offers 2010 are now available at Tourist Information centres in Dundee, Arbroath & Brechin.
