Mid Argyll and Kintyre was the original centre of the first Scot's Kingdom of Dalriada and the fort of Dunadd is thought to have been its capital. With its enormously long coastline surrounding a narrow peninsula, it is no wonder that control of the sea has always been of the utmost importance to the people of this area and that Argyll is known as Scotland's Sea Kingdom.
Kintyre has been described as Scotland's only mainland island. While the peninsulas extreme length and narrow width does give it an island feel, the reason for this is supposed to go back to Viking times when a longship was dragged across the isthmus at the north end, thereby giving Magnus Barelegs the right to call it an island and claim it as his own from the King of Scots.
Mid Argyll and Kintyre has a long spine or hilly ridge running down its length with a very narrow coastal plain on either side. Well wooded and with open heathery moor and upland and lowland farms, many of which are dairy, this is a particularly attractive part of Scotland.
The bustling town of Campbelltown at the peninsula's south east end is a major centre for the area, while Machrihanish, a few miles away near the south west end of the peninsula, has a beautiful beach and two magnificent golf courses.
Mid Argyll and Kintyre is a wonderful place to visit to see archaeological and historic monuments, to enjoy magnificent coastal scenery, to walk, fish, horse ride, cycle and mountain bike and watch wildlife.
