Oban and Loch Awe lie at the northern, more mountainous end of the Argyll mainland – in the land of Lorn .
Oban began life at the end of the 18th Century when a distillery was placed here and in the 19th century raw materials from the Highlands were shipped out from the village. However, it was the coming of the railway that really brought prosperity, it being used for both freight and, very importantly, tourists.
Today, Oban is an important, bustling tourist centre situated on a horseshoe bay on the Firth of Lorn and is known as “The Gateway to the Isles”. A very attractive village, with large stone villas, it is dominated by a Victorian folly, McCaig's Tower, and has a cathedral – St Columba's – a distillery and two historic castles nearby: Dunollie and Dunstaffnage.
Surrounding Oban is the mountainous area of Lorn and includes the sea lochs of Creran, Etive and Feochan, the Island of Kerrera, as well as the famous fresh water Loch Awe, the third largest in Scotland and famed for its wild brown trout.
