Aberdeen & The Grampian Highlands
Grampian occupies the North East corner of Scotland, an area stretching from near Nairn in the east, along the coast to Fraserburgh, and then south almost to Montrose.
The coastline is dotted with small bays and sheltered river mouths, each containing a fishing village: famous ports like Buckie, Fraserburgh, Peterhead and Aberdeen, and smaller villages like Pennan, where “Local Hero” was filmed. While Aberdeen is Europe’s oil capital today, it is an ancient city with a rich cultural heritage and there is much to see.
Inland, there is a rolling landscape with hundred’s of mixed farms and numerous market towns and villages. Cattle, especially beef cattle like Aberdeen Angus, and sheep are very important, most farms also growing oats and turnips for winter feed. Large quantities of malting barley are also grown for whisky distilling.
Grampian also has its share of magnificent Highland scenery, especially “Royal Deeside”, the magnificent area of mountains and valleys that includes much of the eastern section of the Cairngorm National Park and the historic villages of Braemar, Ballater and Aboyne.
In addition to sightseeing, visiting pretty villages and towns on coast or inland, and following the whisky and castle trails, you can enjoy a wide range of activities, including walking and climbing, golf, cycling, mountain biking, cross country and downhill skiing (and summer activities) at The Lecht Ski Centre, horse riding, canoeing, salmon, trout and sea fishing and shooting.
