Fort William & Lochaber

Lochaber is centred on the town of Fort William, which sits at the head of Loch Linnhe and at the foot of The Great Glen, the long valley containing Loch Ness that runs north east to Inverness.

Fort William calls itself “The Outdoor Capital of The UK”, and with reason. In addition to wonderful walking, hill walking and cycling, you will find that rock climbing, ice climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, white water rafting, skiing, canoeing, sailing, quad biking, canyoning and golf are all within easy reach.

To the east of Ft William the mighty Ben Nevis range dominates the landscape, and can be enjoyed on foot, ski or from mountain gondola, while the hills around Glen Coe, site of the Massacre of 1692, are awesome and essential viewing from car, bicycle or foot.

To the west, the land is wild, remote and magnificent. Deep sea lochs, mighty mountains, long lochs, numerous rivers and occasional roads make this a fascinating area to explore, and names like Knoydart, Morar, Moidart, and Morvern add to the mystery. The Point of Ardnamurchan is the most westerly point on the British mainland. You can also enjoy boating and kayaking, and you can island-hop around the many off-shore islands using local ferries.

Historic castles and monuments abound and the traditional culture remains strong, with music and song being ever present in the many local ceilidhs.
