Holidays in Dundee And Angus
Angus is a beautiful part of Scotland situated between Dundee and the Firth of Tay to the south, the North Sea to the east, the Cairngorms National Park and Aberdeenshire to the north, and Perthshire to the east.
The north and west part of Angus is Highland in character and is known as the “Angus Glens”. Hills rising to over 3,000 feet are separated by a number of deep glens (valleys) like Glenisla, Glen Prosen, Glen Clova, Glen Lethnot and Glen Esk. This is beautiful hill farming country and is a wonderful area to explore by car, bicycle or on foot. The hill walking is superb
South of the Glens lies some of Scotland’s best agricultural land in Strathmore. Angus cattle are raised and cereals, potatoes and soft fruits grown around the town of Forfar, which gave its name to the old name for Angus - Forfarshire. Kirriemuir, birthplace of the great writer, JM Barrie, lies just to the north.
Finally, sandwiched between Strathmore and the sea, lie the rolling hills of south and east Angus. Here you will find the market town of Brechin and the historic coastal towns of Montrose, Arbroath, Carnoustie, Broughty Ferry and, of course, the city of Dundee.
If you like history and heritage then you will love Glamis Castle, the House of Dun, Arbroath Abbey, Brechin Castle & Cathedral, Edzell Castle, Montrose Museum and the area’s Pictish symbol stones. Moreover, Dundee, Scotland’s fourth largest city, has “Scott of the Antarctic’s” RSS Discovery on display with its associated museum, as well as the Verdant Works (focusing on the City’s jute industry).
Golf is also hugely popular and Carnoustie is only one of many great courses. You can also walk and climb, sail, cycle, mountain bike, horse ride, enjoy the area’s wildlife, visit pretty fishing villages and enjoy great food and drink in the many restaurants.
