The Kingdom of Fife dates back to the Dark Ages when it was known as “Fib” or “Fif” and was one of the Pictish kingdoms, hence its claim to the title today.
Sandwiched between the Firth of Tay to the north and the Firth of Forth to the south, East Fife is a long promontory of rolling agricultural land surrounded by a very beautiful coastline of rocky stretches interspersed with sandy beaches and numerous ancient fishing towns and villages. This is particularly true of the Firth of Forth coast between Leven in the west and St Andrews in the east, generally known as the “East Neuk” (“neuk” is the Scots word for corner). A trip to East Neuk towns and villages like Anstruther, Pittenweem, Elie and Crail is not to be missed.
North of the coastal villages of the East Neuk lies the fields, rolling hills, woodlands of the Howe of Fife and the ancient burgh of Cupar, while north of this, along the Firth of Tay estuary, is North Fife, a place for bird watchers, cyclists and walkers.
St Andrews was the mediaeval ecclesiastical capital of Scotland and was a major pilgrimage centre. St Andrews and the remains of the Cathedral and Castle are essential viewing. Today, St Andrews is known the world over as the “Home of Golf”, and golf courses abound, but there is much more to the town than that. You can stroll on beautiful beaches, enjoy guided tours of the town, wonderful food and drink and a wide range of shops, visit the St Andrews Aquarium and the potteries and galleries of surrounding villages.
You can also use East Fife as a base from which to tour north to Dundee and on into the Angus Glens, or south to Edinburgh.
