Holidays in Portree And The Isle of Skye
Portree, the main town on Skye, is situated at the head of a sheltered bay half way up the island’s east side. The town gets its name from Port-an-Righ, Gaelic for “Port of the King”, marking King James V’s presence in 1540 when he was subduing the wilder clans from the Highland’s western fringes.
Today, Portree is a very attractive town of traditional, white painted houses and cottages surrounding a working fishing harbour. You will find a wide range of shops selling everything from food to top quality crafts, and there are also a number of excellent restaurants if you don’t feel like cooking for yourself.
Portree’s central location makes it the ideal base from which to explore Skye as a whole. Armadale in the south and beautiful Elgol in the south east can both be reached in an hour by car, while Dunvegan Castle in the west and Duntulm in the north are less than 40 minutes away. You can therefore access all that is best about this marvellous island in an easy day out and still be back in time for a relaxed meal and an evening stroll.
Skye’s Cuillin Hills provide some of the most famous ascents and ridge walks in Europe but you can also sample the Trotternish ridge, the Quirang, and numerous lovely coastal walks. You can fish for trout and sea fish, enjoy boat trips to see whales, dolphins and magnificent scenery, watch otters, cycle, horse ride and pony trek.
You can also visit some wonderful visitor attractions including Dunvegan Castle, Duntulm Castle, the Dun Beag Broch, the Clan Donald Centre, Aros Exerience, Talisker Distillery and even the Glendale Toy Museum and Skye Serpentarium and Reptile World.
A pretty town in a magnificent setting on perhaps the World’s most romantic island.
