Sutherland

Sutherland occupies most of Scotland’s northern mainland and offers three coastlines, a diverse interior, a tiny population and lots to see and do.

To the East, bordering the Moray Firth, a very narrow coastal plain runs north from the strikingly beautiful Dornoch Firth to the hilly Ord of Caithness. Here you can explore miles of golden beaches, woods and hills, and marvellous, picturesque and historic villages like Dornoch, Golspie, Brora and Helmsdale.

Inland from the Dornoch Firth, the scenic Kyle of Sutherland area is drained by four famous salmon rivers and includes the villages of Ardgay, Bonar Bridge and Lairg, while to the north is an area of wild, wet, rolling moorland and occasional hills drained by salmon rivers and dotted with lochs and peaty pools – the famous wildlife-rich Flow Country.

The North Coast is long and rocky with the occasional crofting townships like Melvich, Tongue and Durness situated beside wonderful beaches: a remote, beautiful and relaxing area with some fascinating things to see and so.

Finally, the West Coast is backed by a broad band of ancient mountains and isolated hills overlooking a spectacularly beautiful coastline of deep sea lochs, long headlands and numerous bays, sandy beaches, offshore islands and villages like Lochinver, Scourie and Kinlochbervie.

Wherever you go in Sutherland you can walk, golf, fish, cycle, mountain bike, watch wildlife, relax on beaches, visit ancient monuments and more to your heart’s content.
