Holidays in Dornoch And South East Sutherland

The Royal Burgh of Dornoch sits at the mouth of the stunningly beautiful Dornoch Firth, looking south to Tain and Portmahomack in Easter Ross, east out over the golden sands of Dornoch beach to the blue waters of the Moray Firth, and north up the Sutherland coast, past Embo, Golspie, Brora and Helmsdale, to Caithness.

Dating back to the 13th century, the town’s Cathedral has seen many remarkable events, including Madonna’s wedding, for which she stayed at nearby Skibo Castle, and the honey-coloured sandstone that it and all the older houses are built of makes Dornoch one of the prettiest villages in the Highlands.

Dornoch is famous throughout the golfing world for its famous links, Royal Dornoch, which is in the World’s Top 20. However, there is more to Dornoch than golf. You can sunbathe on beaches and swim in the sea; enjoy beautiful beach, coastal, wood and moorland walks; cycle on quiet roads or tough off-road mountain bike courses; horse ride and pony trek; sea kayak, bird watch, fish and shoot. You can also visit Dornoch’s Historylinks heritage centre, or nearby Dunrobin Castle in Golspie; Clynelish Distillery, Brora; or Glenmorangie Distillery, Tain; the Falls of Shin, Lairg, Timespan Museum & Arts Centre, Helmsdale; Tain Through Time; and the Discovery Centre, Portmahomack.

In addition, a lively programme of events, festivals and performances takes place in Dornoch, the nearby Carnegie Hall, Clashmore, and the many other villages in the area throughout the year.
A beautiful and historic Highland town of honey-coloured stone, fine shops and friendly people.
Golden, sandy beaches, clean blue sea, small farms and traditional crofts backed by woods and heathery hills and moors.

  • One of Scotland’s most attractive small towns with a beautiful beach and ancient cathedral.
  • Lots to see and do - especially golf on Royal Dornoch.
  • An ideal base from which to explore the glorious scenery of South East Sutherland and beyond.
