Holidays in East Dumfries And Galloway
Dumfries & Galloway is distinctively Scottish… and yet it is a world apart. This beautiful region is a continuation of the Southern Uplands, the hills and moors that run right across Scotland immediately to the north of the English Border.
East Dumfries & Galloway follows the line of the M6/M74 north into Scotland and is easily reached from England as a result. However, “easily reached” does not mean that it is very busy, for most traffic rushes up and down the road, missing out on this beautiful part of Scotland as it does so.
Immediately on crossing the Border into Scotland at the head of the Solway Firth, the road passes the famous village of Gretna Green, a favourite in times gone by with elopers from England.
The further north into this region one goes the hillier it becomes, for these are the Southern Upland hills, and this valley is one of the few routes through them. No wonder that it was used by the Romans and numerous Scottish and English armies invading each others’ lands.
Along the way there are delightful villages like Moffat, which was both an important wool and spa town, and Langholm, an important centre for the Border rievers (raiders) in mediaeval times.
In addition to visiting museums and monuments to this area’s tempestuous past, you can fish, golf and enjoy some wonderful walks.
