The Galloway Heartland stretches from the serrated coastline, mudflats and bays of the Solway Firth estuary north through rolling farmland to the lochs, woods, hills and moors of the Southern Uplands.
The main town of this beautiful stretch of coastline is Kirkudbright, which is situated at the head of Kirkudbright Bay, a deep sea inlet. Kirkudbright started as a port, became an artists’ retreat and is now a lovely Scots town to explore. Inland, the attractive town of Castle Douglas dates back to 1792 and serves the wider area as market town.
Further north, the hills are covered with the Galloway Forest Park, a vast tract of woodland and a great place for mountain biking and walking, while Loch Ken is a watersports centre, offering trout fishing, sailing, windsurfing water skiing and bird watching.
You can also visit the ruined Threave and Cardoness Castles in Castle Douglas and Gatehouse of Fleet respectively, and the National Trust for Scotland’s Threave Gardens are wonderful.
