Blair Castle

Blair Atholl

Perthshire’s Blair Castle, situated in one of the finest settings enjoyed by any Scottish Castle, is the ancient seat of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl.

Its strategic location at the gateway to the Grampian Mountains, on the main route north to Inverness, has always been of significance and Blair Castle has been visited by friends and foes, great and small, for centuries.

Today, Blair Castle is a great place to stop off for a very worthwhile break if you are heading up or down the A9 at the start of end of your self catering holiday.

Dating back to the 13th century, the castle is packed full of fascinating artefacts and curios, including antique furniture, art, period dress and a wide range of arms and armour. A wide range of tours is available, including themed tours.

The grounds surrounding the castle were laid out in the 18th century and include a walled garden, wooded grove and ruined church, as well as a deer park and gothic folly. Peacocks roam and Highland cattle graze nearby and you should look out for red squirrels. Children will love the woodland adventure playground.

Gardens include the Hercules Garden, Diana’s Grove and a lovely Sculpture Trail, and you will also find a restaurant and shop.
