Falkirk Wheel

Falkirk

OFalkirk Wheel 4.jpgne of Scotland’s numerous legacies from the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century is the two canals that took boats backwards and forwards from the East to the West Coast. Originally linked by locks, which sadly fell into disrepair many years ago, the canals were reunited in a special Millennium Link Project that made coast-to-coast navigation possible for the first time in 40 years.

Rather than traditional locks, the engineers chose to build the world’s only rotating boatlift, an enormous, 115 foot diameter structure - an iconic Scottish landmark.

The visitor centre enables you to sit and view The Falkirk Wheel, or you can enjoy a delicious coffee and some tasty local food.

Boat trips on the canal are also available, especially the 'Wheel Experience', which lasts Falkirk Wheel 2.jpgapproximately 60 minutes for the round trip and the ascent and descent through the Wheel.

If you are holidaying in Central Scotland and you are looking for something different, then this is it.
