Stirling Castle
Stirling
Stirling Castle, one of the grandest castles in Scotland, towers over the low, flat land of the Forth Valley and dominated mediaeval Central Scotland. Any substantial army moving from north or south through Scotland, from Lowlands to Highlands and vice versa, had to cross the River Forth near Stirling, and this Castle guarded the way.
No surprise then that Stirling Castle witnesses some of the greatest battles in Scottish history - notably William Wallace’s famous victory over the English at Stirling Bridge in 1297, and Robert the Bruce’s profound victory over the same foe at Bannockburn in 1314. Times change and you will be made very welcome today, no matter where you are from!
The Castle is open all year and the Palace will reopen in the summer of 2011 following major restoration work to recreate the King’s and Queen’s Lodgings as they might have appeared in the mid 16th century.
