There's nothing wee, timorous or cowering about the Central Highlands. This large and diverse area can only be described as mean, moody and magnificent.

Bordered to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the east by the North Sea, to the north by the Northern Highlands and to the south by the Drumochter pass and the Cairngorms, the area is filled with superlatives. From the brooding mountains of Glencoe to the rugged and romantic Grampians, with their gorgeous glens and lochs.

Fringing the mountains to the north and east is a coastal plain of rich, rolling farmland, where cattle and sheep roam half wild and barley is grown to feed a plethora of picturesque whisky distilleries.

Even the cities are larger than life. The Granite City of Aberdeen, 'Oil Capital of Europe'; Scotland's adventure sports capital, Fort William; and Inverness, the Highland Capital itself, with its enviable location on the banks of the River Ness at the head of the Great Glen. The latter's central location makes the ideal base from which to explore the whole region.
