Castle Fraser in Aberdeenshire is the most sophisticated example of Scottish Baronial architecture owned by the National Trust for Scotland. Built during the 16th and 17th centuries by two great master masons, Bell and Leiper, this elaborate Z-plan castle is one of the grandest Castles of Mar. The striking simplicity of the Great Hall and the stout walls do much to evoke the atmosphere of past centuries. The castle contains many Fraser family portraits, including one by Raeburn, and fine 18th-and 19th-century carpets, curtains and bed hangings. The extensive grounds are full of interest, with a delightful formal garden, estate trails and adventure playground.

Set in the elegant turreted courtyard of the nearby converted stable block is the John Bell House, named after the original stonemason. This beautiful, spacious apartment has many original features including spiral stone staircases and contains some fine pieces of antique furniture. The sophisticated and graceful sitting room with its rich coloured flooring and elegant furnishings creates the heart of this home and is perfect for gathering in the evenings after an enjoyable day out and about. The bedrooms are fresh, bright and full of traditional charm, and the cosy kitchen with its large Aga has been well designed and is fully equipped to cater for every cook’s need.

Set amidst parkland with fields of grazing cows and views of the castle, this charming holiday home provides ideal accommodation for families with each wing of the apartment having its own turret and spiral stone staircase.

The beautiful surrounding area of Aberdeenshire with its lush farmland and rolling hills offers many enjoyable day trips including visits to a wide range of stately homes and castles, museums and heritage centres, picturesque coastal villages and famous distilleries. Castle Fraser is also within easy access of many golf courses, and the city of Aberdeen has much to offer.
