Really enjoyed staying at Wallis, the house was more spacious than we had expected and very well equipped and appointed. The photos do not do justice to the fabulous views you have from every window! We were very comfortable and warm there in mixed weather, and it was a good house for both good and bad weather, as its elevated position mean that even bad weather added further drama to the scenic views. We have known and loved Scourie for many years and this was an excellent place to be based in.

We were grateful to the owners of Wallis and the CKDG staff for their flexibility in agreeing to let between dates to suit us of Christmas and New Year. This was our second visit to Wallis, the previous having been in the big freeze over Christmas of 2009. This time the weather was completely different, wet and windy throughout, but we still got out every day and enjoyed some great low-level walks. When the rain eased enough to allow cameras out we grabbed some spectacular seascapes. The location of Wallis could hardly be bettered, less than a mile off the main road with great views across Scourie Bay down to the village itself. The accommodation is comfortable, rather than pristine. We like the open plan living/dining area with arch through to the kitchen, which means that the "cook of the day" is not isolated from the rest of the group during meal preparation. Wallis is well equipped: plenty of hanging/drying space in the entrance hallway; two fridges and a freezer; good quality washing machine and tumble dryer. However, the kitchen units really are on their last legs; to justify fully Wallis's price bracket these, and some of the lounge furniture, need to be updated. The heating works well - important for winter visits! With the wind keeping us off the mountains our walking trips focused on the fantastic beaches in the area plus some loch-side and riverside expeditions. If you've never been to Sandwood Bay and are fit for a two-hour walk each way, then this is a must, but also the much more accessible beaches at Oldshoremore on the south-facing coast beyond Kinlochbervie are well worth a visit, or slightly further afield the beaches at Balnakeil Bay near Durness. We were surprised to find anything open at this time of year, but the Kinlochbervie Hotel was and we enjoyed lunch there a couple of times and also the cafe/bookshop at the Balnakeil "Craft Village", which was welcoming and pleasant inside although the "Village" of pre-fab trailer buildings is not itself pleasing to the eye! You need to enjoy the journey to get as far north as Scourie (we took two days each way from the Midlands), but once there, the location and surrounding area is second to none. Once again, despite the weather, we loved it!

A folder containing information about the cottage and locality - heating system, wi-fi code, local shop opening times, local hotels, etc. - would have been appreciated. A helpful note from Mrs Macdonald was very useful in its stead. The cottage was very comfortable and warm, the views were spectacular and area was superb.

Beautifully situated overlooking Scourie Bay gave wonderful opportunities of watching many types of sea-birds including the spectacular Gannet feeding in the bay. It was a pity we had such awful weather for which we cannot blame the property. We didn't even see a sunset! The shower was quite the best and easiest to use I have come across and the en suite and additional washing areas were a boon even though there was only three of us. My only complaint was that the cooker needed experience, as when using the grill, the element did not seem to react to the variable heat control. Despite the weather a fantastic place to stay. The caretaker Mrs MacDonald was very helpful and made us feel welcome.

The house itself was very adequate slightly let down by the bathroom although the shower downstairs was good. Also the old style electric cooker in the kitchen made cooking a bit of a task.

This is a lovely and relaxing house to stay in. Would hire again no problem.

Stunning setting overlooking Scourie bay - great watching weather of all sorts sweeping in over the Minch! House comfortable though, in October, recommend taking coal/wood for open fire (though one bag of coal is provided, at a cost). Kitchen equipment a bit tired and mismatched (like my own kitchen, so fine really!). Perfect location for visiting wonderful north west coasts, beautiful beaches, lovely walks over hills and by lily lochs, and Scourie village has a grand little shop, plus hotel and cafe for meals. Note, though, the hotel and cafe are closed, I think, from Oct to April.

This review is our personal opinion and may not reflect the opinions of others. We've stayed at many self catering cottages over the last 20 years and have had a mixed bag as the descriptions do not always show the negative bits and about 3/4 of those we've stayed in we would not rent again. HOWEVER, Wallis was not only as described but exceeded our expectations - in fact we plan to re-book for next year. The accommodation was very spacious, exceptionally clean and very comfortable and the views and sunsets were perfect. It's location affords privacy without being too far away from amenities (shop and bar) via an easy road and the kitchen is well equipped. Great strolls around the nearby headland and beach which you can see from the the lounge area. Just a couple of tiny quibbly things that stopped us giving it a full 5 star rating: The walk to the beach was down a long steep field, great for going down but harder on the way back - not a problem for the younger, fitter guests but difficult for me, and no seating in the garden, it would benefit from a patio table, etc.
