It is well worth the journey over the Minch (wonderful in itself) to stay in Boisdale House, which has some of the best views in South Uist. Near the southern end of the island, where the sea is brilliant green and the beaches are silver, the house stands next to a tidal sea loch, facing Lochboisdale over the water to the north east. Times have changed little here, and it is an ideal and charming place to escape from the pressure of today's environment, and to experience true freedom. Once you have stayed here once, you will want to visit it again and again.
Boisdale House has been thoughtfully modernised to provide every convenience, while maintaining the character of the building. It provides plenty of comfortable living space for everyone to escape to their own corner. There is a large kitchen/dining area, which comfortably seats 12 people, leading into a family/TV room. Across the hall is a drawing room large enough for everyone to gather in during the evening, or for quieter reading in the daytime.
South Uist is linked by causeway to Eriskay in the south and Benbecula, North Uist and Berneray in the north. The western coast line, or 'machair' is a fertile strip of meadowland, and is home to rare wild flowers and birdlife. Behind the sand dunes at the edge of the machair, miles of white, sandy beach stretch along the entire length of the islands and the sea is warmed by the passing Gulf Stream. The eastern coastline is rocky and mountainous, and provides some fabulous hill walking and fishing. The other islands are all within easy reach for a day's exploring.
There is plenty to do for every age group on South Uist, including cycling, walking, birdwatching, swimming and collecting shellfish such as cockles and mussels. Sea fishing, freshwater fishing, snipe shooting and some deerstalking can be arranged, as can pony trekking, sailing and golf. In addition there is a great variety of wildlife to observe - golden eagles, seals, porpoises, otters - and occasionally basking sharks.
Most families come to South Uist by car ferry, either to Lochmaddy in North Uist or to Lochboisdale, in South Uist. There are also two daily flights from Glasgow to Benbecula, where you can hire a car. The nearest shop/pub is approximately three miles from the house.
