Steeped in history, (visited by both Mary Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlie,) This home has character and charm. It is an exceptionally interesting “B listed castle”. It has been sympathetically restored by its current owners to provide a magical yet welcoming and comfortable holiday home. Perfectly positioned near Stirling, Plane Castle has ready access to both Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as being an ideal spot to explore the north.
The castle with its spiral staircases, painted beamed ceilings, stone vaulted rooms and thick walls is full of atmosphere. The period detail is everywhere and yet you have comfortable warm bedrooms, plenty of bathrooms and splendid public rooms to make you comfortable. Plane Castle can be taken as 2 houses or one single property. It comprises the 1449 Tower House sleeping 4(+2) and the slightly later Manor House built in 1528 which sleeps a further 8 people.
Both properties can enjoy the magnificent gardens complete with ponds, rowing boat, ducks, sculptures and delightful planting of beech tunnels, wisteria walks and even a Hobbit House, and Wendy play-house! Neither of the properties are suitable for the less mobile tenant and the spiral stairs are steep. Young children should be supervised both on the stairs and in the garden where the water features are not fenced off.
You will be awed and delighted by this fantastic house with it huge Great Hall with its wonderful beamed ceiling and antique furniture is gathered around the roaring fire. At one end of this huge room is a dining area with the fire and comfy seating at the other. It is perfect for socialising and celebrating and has all the atmosphere and charm you could wish for.
With the Great Hall taking up most of the first floor, other public rooms are on the ground floor where four original stone vaulted rooms, provide a toilet, a cosy TV/Snug with secret stair, a dining room and a breakfast room where the cooking facilities are built into the original vast fireplace of the castle. It is a delightful and fascinating set of spaces. The 4 bedrooms are located on the second floor and have continued the sense of history and atmosphere with small castle windows that look out across the delightful garden.
This is a house to savour and is a marvellous venue for family gatherings and celebrations. It will delight young visitors who will love the castle and gardens and yet it is centrally positioned to enjoy seeing and learning about much of Scotland. Day trips to both coasts are easy and the beautiful Borders, Perthshire and Trossachs are all worth the journey.
Also available for 4 (+2) is The Tower. Both properties can be booked as one, Plane Caslte.
