A truly captivating spot and an exceptionally well renovated holiday home make this a very special place to stay. Foulis Castle has for the past 700 years been the historic home of the Chiefs of the Clan Munro. It was remodelled in the second half of the C18th having suffered a sacking at the hands of the Jacobites (the Munros were on the Government side). The present Chief is the 33rd of the name and his mother still lives in the main part of the Castle. Foulis has a magical appeal making this an idyllic and secluded holiday spot. This is a place of fascinating history as well as beauty.
The recently (2008) converted Bakehouse is a separate and completely private wing to the ancient courtyard. Originally planned for the use of the Munro family themselves The Bakehouse has been beautifully renovated whilst still retaining great character. Off the main entrance hall is a downstairs bedroom, a utility room, and a shower/steam room. The utility room leads to the area where all the bread for the castle would once have been baked, now a huge and superbly laid out open plan kitchen/living area, a wonderful space to cook, eat and socialise featuring in one corner the original C18th stone oven flanked by a woodburning stove, but with the best of modern technology here too in the form of an environmentally friendly geothermal heat pump providing underfloor heating for the magnificent stoneflagged floor. You will hardly need a fire. At the far end of this room, the Munros have dramatically exposed the outer wall of the old defensive tower with its arrowslit windows. Down five stone steps is the atmospheric, subtly lit, dining room in the base of the tower and another woodburning stove in an original fireplace in what might have been the guardroom. Upstairs, in the upper part of the old tower you enter the superb two storeyed drawing room with it’s polished wood floor, rugs and a large open log fire. A long passage leads to a double bedroom, a bathroom, and two further bedrooms (one double, one twin) both of which are ensuite one with a luxurious whirlpool bath. All the bathrooms have showers over the baths and the quality is fantastic throughout.
Outside you are free to enjoy 2650 acre Foulis Estate with its wonderful views of the Cromarty Firth, beautiful trees, rich cornfields and hill land behind. The area has much to do, with numerous golf courses including the famous Dornoch & Nairn championship courses, Castles to visit, Culloden battlefield, ‘Munros’ to climb, beaches, fishing or wildlife watching in this lovely area.
If you are a larger party you could also take The Pavilion on the opposite side of the courtyard, which sleeps four.
