Gardener’s House, and its neighbour, Crocdhu Cottage, are situated on the 23,000 acre Borrobol Estate in the famous Sutherland and Caithness Flow Country peatlands. This is big-sky country at its best, wide open wilderness scarcely touched by the hand of Man, and you will have the freedom to explore it to your heart’s content.
Gardener’s House is a traditional, stone-built, 3 bedroom detached Highland estate cottage which has been beautifully and sympathetically refurbished to provide excellent holiday accommodation for those who love the great spaces and wide-open views of northern Scotland. The house has a delightful sitting room, made cosy and welcoming by a coal/peat fire and Freeview TV. The kitchen, with solid wooden furniture and stone-flagged floors, is the perfect place to prepare and eat your meals and is kept warm and snug by its solid fuel heater. The bathroom has been redecorated for 2008 and is bright and cheerful. Upstairs there are 3 very comfortable and attractive bedrooms, all of which have a traditional feel with antique furniture, coombed ceilings and lovely views. The fully fenced garden is laid to grass and perfect for younger children to play safely.
Borrobol is justly renowned for its wildlife, with 1,000 red deer on the estate and many more in the wider area. There are also roe deer, badgers, foxes and pine marten. More than 100 bird species have also been recorded, including golden eagles, hen harriers and ospreys. A series of archaeological remains going back over 3,000 years to the Bronze and Iron Ages are also fascinating to explore.
You can fish on one of Scotland’s finest hill lochs, Loch AsCaig, which is teaming with wild brown trout (record 5.7 lbs in 1981), and where there is a boat included for your exclusive use. This loch is 1 mile from the cottage and is ideally suited to everyone from beginners to experts. You can also deer stalk and rough shoot subject to prior arrangement with the owners.
Borrobol is an ideal base from which to explore the wider Northern Highlands, with the beaches and golf courses of Brora, Golspie and Dornoch and the attractions of Helmsdale’s Timespan Heritage Centre, Golspie’s Dunrobin Castle, the Queen Mother’s Castle of Mey and John o’ Groats all within easy reach. Wherever you choose to go you will be assured of spectacular views and very warm welcomes.
