House of Dun is a magnificent Georgian mansion designed and built by William Adam in 1730 for David Erskine, the 13th Laird of Dun. The house, steeped in Scottish history, is surrounded by 800 acres of gardens, woodland and farmland and contains many historic royal mementos as well as a fine collection of 18th and 19th century furniture, ancestral portraits and exquisite embroidery. The walls and ceilings of the grand public rooms are decorated with the most magnificent and elaborate plasterwork by Joseph Enzer.
North Stables is set in the glorious and extensive grounds of this Palladian house and forms part of the attractive 18th century sandstone stables, which were once home to the estate’s coachmen and grooms. The private entrance to this welcoming self-catering apartment is reached through a lovely courtyard garden and up the original external staircase.
This cosy and welcoming holiday home has been completely renovated yet is still full of character and country charm and creates an ideal self-catering holiday for those wishing to discover this lovely area of Scotland. The bright and spacious sitting room is decorated to a high standard with comfortable furnishings chosen to blend in well with its traditional surroundings, and the kitchen is fully-equipped to cater for modern-day needs. There are lovely views from the twin bedroom across to the Montrose Basin nature reserve. This important two-mile-wide tidal lagoon is a wildlife sanctuary famous for its migratory wading birds and wildfowl. Osprey and kingfishers have also been spotted here making it paradise for birdwatchers. This is also an excellent location for the keen golfer with many nearby courses including the two 18-hole Scottish links courses at Montrose where records go back to the 16th century.
The nearby harbour town of Montrose, once home to prosperous merchants, sea captains and wealthy landowners, radiates history with a wealth of classical architecture. This beautiful area has some of the finest sea cliffs on the east coast and there are several wonderful sandy beaches close by including St Cyrus and Lunan Bay.
