Set within the glorious and extensive grounds of the magnificent House of Dun, this attractive 18th-century sandstone building was once home to the coachmen and grooms of this important Scottish estate. Now completely renovated, South Stables provides very comfortable holiday accommodation for up to 4 guests.
House of Dun is a wonderful Georgian mansion belonging to the National Trust for Scotland. Designed and built by William Adam in 1730 for David Erskine, the 13th Laird of Dun, this house is steeped in Scottish history and surrounded by 800 acres of beautiful gardens, woodland and farmland. This special Palladian house contains many historic royal mementos as well as a fine collection of 18th and 19th century furniture, ancestral portraits and exquisite embroidery. The walls and ceilings of the grand public rooms are decorated with the most spectacular and elaborate white plasterwork by Joseph Enzer.
The private entrance to this delightful self-catering apartment is reached through a lovely courtyard and up the original external staircase. Although completely renovated, this cosy and welcoming holiday home is still full of character and country charm. Throughout, South Stables is decorated to a high standard with comfortable furnishings chosen to blend in well with its traditional surroundings. The cosy, spacious sitting room is ideal for relaxing in after a day exploring this lovely part of Scotland, and the kitchen is modern and well equipped to cater for modern-day needs.
Lovely views can be enjoyed from the large twin bedroom across to Montrose Basin Nature Reserve. This important two-mile-wide tidal lagoon is a wildlife sanctuary famous for its migratory wading birds and wildfowl. Osprey and kingfishers have also been spotted here making it paradise for birdwatchers.
The local harbour town of Montrose, once home to prosperous merchants, sea captains and wealthy landowners, radiates history with a wealth of classical architecture. This beautiful area has some of the finest sea cliffs on the east coast and there are several wonderful sandy beaches close by including St Cyrus and Lunan Bay.
