Harmony is a fine example of a classic Georgian mansion and is one of the most perfect and precious architectural properties owned by the National Trust for Scotland. Surrounded by a beautiful, tranquil walled garden in the heart of the Scottish Borders, this early 19th-century house was built by a local Melrose joiner, who named it after his Jamaican plantation where he made his fortune.
Throughout, this beautiful National Trust for Scotland house is finely furnished and decorated to create an elegant yet homely atmosphere. The fresh, bright drawing room which still retains its unique and magnificent cedar timber doors and wood panelling creates a perfect focal point for gathering in the evenings and enjoying good conversation in front of the roaring log fire. The impressive atmosphere of the grand dining room, with its large dining table, lovely antique sideboards and ancestral portraits, is ideal for long, memorable holiday dinners. Then after an exhilarating day, climb the sweeping staircase to the comfortable, pretty bedrooms and dream of what tomorrow will bring.
Enjoy strolling through the exceptional garden with its fine lawns and stunning borders and marvel over the productive vegetable beds and wonderful fruit orchards. During springtime a rich display of daffodils, narcissi and fritillaries can be enjoyed across the lawn.
Being just a few minutes’ walk from the ancient ruined Abbey and pretty historic town of Melrose, Harmony is a superb holiday destination for those who enjoy fishing, walking, cycling, golf or just relaxing in the pure beauty and peace of the Borders. The area is steeped in history with many fascinating local architectural attractions from Floors Castle, home of the Duke of Roxburghe, to Abbotsford, the former home of the writer Sir Walter Scott. There are many beautiful walks to be enjoyed from this lovely Trust property, along the banks of the River Tweed or, for the more adventurous, the triple peaks of the Eildon Hills offer magnificent views over the Tweed Valley to the Lammermuir and Moorfoot hills and beyond.
