Activities:
Outside, the estate is brimming with places to explore - stunning walks, cycle trails, places to fish, boating trips or dreamy picnics. The habitat is abundant with interesting wildlife and birds which thrive in this remote haven and golden eagles nest high on the hills above. The Loch is home to waterfowl, such as red & black throated divers, duck, swan, heron, oyster catchers and even the occasional osprey.
The surrounding hills, with their many lochs and cairns, are steeped in ancient Highland history. Behind the house, there is a track which leads up to Loch na Sreinge – from here the river, known locally as Red Ford, slips down the glen to Loch Scammadale. Local lore has it that the river got its nickname after a battle in 1294, where the chief of the Campbell clan was slain during an encounter with the rival Clan MacDougall, over a land dispute. At the summit sits Carn Cailean or Colin’s Cairn which commemorates this battle.
At the front of the house there is a large sloping lawn with all encompassing views over the loch. Close by there is a private jetty where a boat is provided, giving the keen fisherman the opportunity to catch a brown trout or two. Alternatively, a gentle row down the loch will bring you to a little island, where the haunted ruins of ‘Castle of the Red-Haired Maiden’ lay.
