Yet another gorgeous cottage from Scottish Canal's, this one sits on Lock 11 of the Crinan Canal, certainly one of the prettiest canals in Scotland. Bannatyne Cottage was originally built in the 19th century as a lock keeper's cottage - it is now a beautifully renovated and stunningly presented holiday cottage. Bright colours and fresh linens, combined with tweed and tartan mix to give a nod to Scotland and the interior designer.

Outside this delightful spot is the Crinan Canal where you can watch the boats moving through the lock or walk for miles along the towpath. The local village has a good pub and the famous Crinan Hotel is not far. The garden is private and has a BBQ for fine days. It is a great jumping off point for the Argyll coast and an ideal spot to return to at the end of the day where the wood-burning stove welcomes you.

If you are looking for more properties that are situated on Scotland's canal ways, here are a selection of interesting self catering cottages that are we have throughout Scotland:

    Bannatyne Cottage reviews
A great place to get away from it all and walk. Cottage equipment however needs reviewing, there was no tin opener, but a minor detail. Directions need updating, we were advised to cross the canal at the second crossing (Dunardy rolling bridge) however, this bridge has been out of action for a considerable time ( years according to a local). Co-op in Lochgilphead well stocked. Cross the canal via the lock outside the cottage, turn left and walk a short way down the road until you see a sign directing you up to a car park view point, and enjoy the view. There are also some woodland walks signposted from here.
Owners Response: "I’m sorry to hear that you received incorrect directions. The bridge has indeed been out of action for a considerable time and our directions were updated at the time of the bridge closure however it appears, as a result of human error, you were provided with a previous version. I’m sorry for the inconvenience caused and can confirm I have taken steps to ensure this does not re-occur. I have also asked the housekeeper to replace the tin opener. I would like to thank you for bringing this matter to our attention as it enables us to rectify the issue raised."
    Mrs Barton - September 2016
It's in a faultless location just beside one of the lock gates. We loved talking to the people on their boats and finding out about their trips. There are miles of lovely walks literally from the door of the cottage. If you are a keen cook however, you may find the kitchen a bit dark and lacking in adequate worktop space. The bathroom feels a bit dated too. There is no dishwasher. If everyone is eating out for every meal this won't matter but I normally do a bit of cooking on holiday. The cottage does lose the sun in the evening. Time will vary of course. We were there early September and lost the sun around 5/6 pm. There is no WiFi. I really missed that - its so useful on holiday looking up places to eat, go walking etc.
    Mrs Edens - September 2015
Good quality bedding and decor in the bedrooms. Colours were bright and welcoming, although I feel the lounge would benefit from a little more character and adult seating. The garden would benefit from more upkeep although this was not really an issue during our stay as it was too wet and windy. Our 3 year old son enjoyed watching the yachts going through the canal lock outside the door. I would recommend a journey down the Kintyre peninsula to catch a boat to the Isle of Gigha.
