The views from the living room and master bedroom are just fantastic , the house is well equipped with everything that you could really need. The garden has an apple tree that our kids loved picking apples from and making into a crumble which was a nice bonus. Everything in Brodick is 5 mins away including the beach which makes it an ideal base for most types of holidays.
Mr Warden - October 2016
Hillshore is in a great position the views are lovely and it is easy to walk to the beach, shops, hotel and ferry terminal from the house. It is more spacious than the website made it look and the kitchen is well equipped. There is plenty of space for 8 of you around the big table and on the 3 sofas in the living room. The bedrooms are well proportioned and all the furniture is of good qualilty with nice bedding. The shower is powerful and hot. The overall decor of the house was scruffy compared to how it looked on the website with grubby paintwork and cobwebs in corners and patches of damp. The back porch is wooden and looks pretty rotten. However the kitchen and bath room were clean as were the kitchen equipment. All the beds were freshly made up (and were comfortable) and there were 8 big bath towels of good quality, a couple of hand towels would be useful too for the bathroom. After my initial disappointment of it being a little scruffy we found it is really homely and we had a great week there and would happily re book but just feel it could do with a little tlc. It is just the one bath room and with 8 people that takes a little organisation - but I knew when I booked there was only the one bathroom. If your friends and family are bath room hoggers maybe its not the place for you. We ate in more than we planned as the house had such a nice feel and we all enjoyed our evenings in. The garden has plenty chairs and a couple of loungers and we had perfect weather to be able to use them. The rope swing is "awesome" according to my daughter. There is parking on the lane to the rear of the property and there is space for 3 cars. It would be useful if there was info in the house regarding the bin days and the recycling as the people before us didn't recyle and filled the wheely bin which is only emptied every 2 weeks. Brodick castle is well worth a visit you can walk there via the Fisherman's walk, we enjoyed a meal in the Douglas Hotel where the staff were friendly (as were all the locals we encountered) , explored all round the island. We walked and my husband enjoyed cycling the figure of 8 route round the island. Arran is a great place and we would recommend a holiday there.
Mrs Warner - August 2016
We have stayed at hill shore before and have always enjoyed our holiday here. It's a great house for families who enjoy active outdoor pursuits. The shed holds all the bikes, golf clubs and pram! The view from the rear of the house is just wonderful and never ceases to amaze us. This year was the added bonus of wi fi which the kids enjoyed especially when it was approaching bedtime and they were tired out. Some of our party played golf at lamlash - worth noting it's just £10 for a round on a Tuesday. It's hilly in places but for seasoned golfers no problem! We walked along the beach path to th wine port one sunny day and spent a couple of hours sitting outside eating a very nice lunch. We also took the grandchildren to the ormadale pub for a bar tea one evening. It's ideal as there is a garden outside where they can play when they get fed up with adults chat. Reasonable prices for pub grub and a good kids menu too. Our favourite spot is still sannox beach- the kids love the adventure of crossing the burn on the stepping stones. Some of our party also went pony trekking here and our 10 year old granddaughter loved this part of her holiday. The outdoor centre does gorge walking and other extreme activities which some of our party took part in and thoroughly enjoyed. We can recommend hill shore- only negative point is that there is only one bathroom!
Mrs Forbes - July 2016
Cottage in a good location overlooking the bay and a short walk from the shops. Big gardens to front and rear. Rooms are very spacious and well equipped. Towels and bedding provided although website said we had to bring our own.
The only complaint I would make is the decoration is dated and there are some damp patches.
Owners Response: "RESPONSE FROM COTTAGES & CASTLES
Thank you for your review and we can confirm that linen & towels are provided ( not beach towels )."
Mr Jones - July 2016
There is plenty to do within a short walk of the property. Recommend booking a table in the Fiddlers Bar Bistro where they have great food and live music. Going further afield visit Machrie Moor and the standing stone circles. There is a parking area and the walk to the stones is along a farm track (can be a bit muddy so wear boots). There are six stone circles at the end of the track and it is a place not to miss. Arran is a beautiful island and Hillshore provides an ideal base for exploring it.
Mr Findlay - February 2016
Hillshore is a comfortable house, well equipped and clean. We like it because its near to amenities, restaurants, bars and shops and there are lovely views of Brodick Bay and Goat Fell. This year we had a problem with one of the internal lights, but it was quickly dealt with by the local contact.
Mr Horsburgh - August 2015
This is a fantastic house with exceptional views to goat fell. The lounge overlooks Brodick bay and the wee ones enjoyed watching the ferry coming and going during the day. The house is well equipped especially the kitchen. Plenty of crockery and cutlery along with good sized fridge freezer. The dishwasher( essential!) was absolutely necessary especially with a big family group like ours. We liked being in the hub of Brodick- it was easy to nip out for a pint of milk ot go for a game of putting with the little children. Our party included golfers and cyclist so the shed was a bonus for storage. The rope swing in the garden is a great attraction! There are plenty of garden chairs and tables although sitting out later in the evening was tricky- the midges descended! The golfers played at lamlash and Brodick (good value) also sannox. Sannox was rather expensive at £20 for a round it was felt. Sannox beach is the favourite for the children- they love jumping over the stepping stones to the beach. We had our own version of highland games- throwing the welly boot, egg and spoon and three legged races. A tradition firmly held in the family- we have little trophies for the winners( everyone is a winner of course!)Seals were spotted but not much collected in the pools by the wee ones with their nets. Great fun though! Adults had lunch in the beer garden at the corrie hotel- wonderful views over the water. Lunch was rather expensive but I suppose you pay for the location. The house would be even better if it had another toilet! Also wi fi would be an added benefit too. All in all a great holiday house- ideal for a big family group who enjoy outdoor pursuits. It should be noted that with the introduction of the road equivalent tariff, the ferry fares are considerably cheaper than in previous years.
Mrs Forbes - July 2015
Hope this property remains available to rent during the summer months. Perfect location from which to explore the island.
Mrs Paterson - July 2014
Hillshore is a lovely clean, comfortable house, with a well equipped kitchen if you don't want to eat out all the time. The views of Brodick Bay and Goat fell are wonderful & there are plenty of restaurants & bars nearby. We love it and hope to return for our third trip next year.
Mr Horsburgh - August 2013
We really enjoyed our stay at HIllshore and intend to go back again. The accommodation was clean, light and airy. The kitchen was well equipped with white goods and the lounge had a nice TV, ipod dock, and games for a rainy day (which, in our case, were unused). The rooms were larger than expected and had wonderful views over Brodick Bay and Goatfell. The gardens were well maintained and we were able to sit outside. No separate parking was provided but there was plenty of parking in the lane. It would be unfair to be critical but for parties larger than 4 a second bathroom/toilet, or ensuite, would be welcome, as would a 4-slice toaster.
Dr Leach - May 2013
We had a super holiday over Easter and the power was back on which was even better! The house suited our needs perfectly. It was comfortable and warm and had everything that we needed. We even managed a couple of barbecues (with jackets and gloves on!) The views were stunning and I don't think I have seen Arran look more lovely. We had sun all week and the snow set the hills off perfectly. Great walks, cycling and a game of golf were all enjoyed. I recommend the house and certainly hope to be back.
Mrs Wooley - March 2013
Great house, comfortable, well equipped & clean. We had a lovely stay, the house was ideally situated near to a good selection of resturaunts & bars. Lovely view from the house & the garden was pretty.
Mr Horsburgh - August 2012
The house was in a perfect location with fantastic views. The views simply took your breath away. The house had everything we needed and I would stay there again.
Miss Lee - August 2012
Hillshore was spot on. Everything one could wish for. Delightful view of the sea and mountains. Every convenience, spacious and comfortable and to top it all, delightful weather. We had a truly relaxing holiday and returned home refreshed and tanned. Roll on next year!
Mr Walker - August 2012
Thoroughy enjoyed our stay. Hillshore was in the perfect location with wonderful views over the bay and Goatfell. Lovely house with plenty of space indoor and out. We had some lovely weather and this enabled us to enjoy the lovely garden and enjoyed bbq's with the back garden being a sun trap especially in the evenings. The children particularly enjoyed the freedom of the large outdoor space. Only reason did not give it full 5 stars was that the housekeeping could have been better, particularly in the kitchen and bathroom areas; though would add this would not stop us from visiting again.
Mrs Abercrombie - July 2012
had a great holiday on the lovely island of arran loved the house everything there you would need for a holiday. excellent eating out on the island..,walks were great and the kids had a great time. we will all definately be back again
Mr Wales - June 2012
We thoroughly enjoyed our first family holiday at Hillshore with our new granddaughter and would highly recommend Hillshore. This family holiday home is great value for money. The views from the house are wonderful and the location provides easy access to all of the amenities in Brodick. The house is light, airy and comfortable with plenty of space for everyone. A second shower room /toilet would make the house perfect. The house is much bigger and the views more stunning than the pictures on the web page can illustrate.
Mrs Hartley - May 2012
A beautifully presented house in a wonderful location overlooking Brodick bay and up onto goat fell. Hillshore is spacious and well equipped. An ideal place to stay and explore Arran, literally a couple of minutes walk from the shops, and restaurants in Brodick, but located perfectly on a quiet residential road just out of the main part of the town. Hillshore is very tastefully decorated, beautifully clean and well kept with lovely gardens both front and rear. The views from the living room and two double bedrooms are spectacular, literally 'picture postcard' in their aspect, capturing the very essence of Arran. 'Eilean Mor' is a fantastic restaurant on Brodick main street offering mainly pizza and pasta dishes. Great food and value with a long running '2 for 1' offer on pizza's. The staff are very friendly and accommodating and offer a great welcome. Brodick bar and brasserie offers good food but the meals are extremely small and costly. Our £17.50 main course left both my wife and I very definitely hungry. Even those with small appetites are likely to need a starter, main course and desert. Lochranza is a beautiful place, we had a lovely lunch and welcome in the Lochranza hotel. Arran is a golfer's paradise, during our visit in early April I played the courses at Lochranza, Brodick and Lamlash with my 8-year old son. All courses were great fun to play, Lochranza is a 9-hole course and could be described as cheap and cheerful and probably not for 'serious' golfer's. It is ideal for beginners like my son and wonderfully informal as you wander the course with the local sheep and often the local red deer herd. Although rustic in presentation it is in an absolutely stunning location and was great fun to play. Brodick is a well kept 18-hole course with some really interesting holes and great views across the beach and bay. Even though the course is very definitely seaside it is very much a flat parkland course as opposed to links - recommended. Lamlash is very hilly and steep in parts, offering fantastic views out onto holy isle, stunning scenery and some really interesting holes with a number of 'blind' tee and approach shots. We received a really warm welcome from the pro and the clubhouse staff. Highly recommended.
Mr Robson - April 2012
In general the property was well located, and was fitted and equipped to a good standard. We were surprised to find an item of children’s clothing had been left in one of the bedrooms and we would have expected this kind of thing to be checked between guests. Other than this the property was to a good standard, with the kitchen being particularly spacious & well apportioned and to the liking of the cooks. We enjoyed our weekend and would certainly return.
Owners Response: "I have discussed this issue with the housekeeper who sends her apologies. I have asked her to ensure that all bedrooms are thoroughly checked between guests."
Mr Edwards - November 2011
This was our first trip to Arran. We were so glad we ended up in this cottage! The photographs on the website do not do the cottage & its views justice - They are fabulous. There is a very large dining kitchen, large lounge and 3 good-sized bedrooms. There are beautiful views of the whole bay from both the lounge & double bedrooms. There is wooden floors throughout. It is very family-friendly. The kitchen has good quality crockery & cutlery and evey pan & utensil you could possibly need. The owners left a lovely welcome gift and even fresh milk in the fridge. Brodick itself was beautiful and a great base for exploring the Island. There was plenty to do locally even in wet weather.
Mrs Middleton - October 2011
Lovely cottage with a wonderful view. Well equipped and very comfortable. Close to groceries, ferry terminal and attractions (so convenient even without a car).
Mrs Mideo - October 2011
Our family had a wonderful week at Hillshore. The accommodation was exactly as we had hoped and your website described. The youngest in our family was 3 and she loved the garden and the 'ladder' bed. The scenery from the terrace was spectacular and the location ideal. We wwould love to return to Hillshore
Mrs Birrell - July 2011
Hillshore Cottage is situated in the heart of Brodick and offers outstanding views overlooking the bay and Goat Fell. The house is near to all amenities yet it is very peaceful and secluded. The cottage is spacious, airy and well equipped. My family and I loved this house and we had a truly relaxing and fun-filled holiday. Being able to feast on the spectacular views from this house was an unexpected luxury that will ensure that we will return. Thank you!
