This 19th-century traditional stone lodge, sleeping 13 guests across six bedrooms, is set on a quiet single track road looking out towards the enchanting shores of Loch Shin. Just 7 miles from Lairg in the heart of Sutherland, it’s well-positioned for large groups and families who want to enjoy time together in a country house, surrounded by nature. It’s also the ideal place to begin your group adventures in the northern Highlands or towards the East and West coasts of Alba.

With beautiful period features and contemporary creature comforts, this recently refurbished property ensures that guests enjoy a warm and comfortable stay in stylish surroundings with contemporary creature comforts. The owners have lived here until recently so the house is very well-equipped with thoughtful attention to detail. Sink into a comfortable new double bed in what used to be the nursery, with its animal frieze gracing the wall, or soak in the big claw-foot bath after a long jaunt. The whole house is fully central heated and feels warm and cosy in all seasons.

Step in from dreich days, and shake off muddy gear in the boot and utility room where there’s a drying cupboard. Venture into the drawing room where you can curl up on the cosy seating and enjoy the warmth of the central heating, and the welcoming open fire (unlimited logs supplied), and unwind with films on the TV and DVD player, though the fun banter with friends and spectacular array of games and books to read in the property may draw more interest. There’s also a grand piano and electric organ, bound to encourage fun evening entertainment.

The well-equipped kitchen includes a handsome Aga, an electric oven and hob, and ample space to create large feasts for hungry walkers. And there’s cold food storage and a larder so cooks can plan ahead. Gather together in the dining room to catch up on the day or to raise a toast for special occasions. There’s also a spacious study on the ground floor with a sofa bed, and a family bathroom with a shower and WC where you can refresh before dinner.

Upstairs, there’s two further bathrooms, and a separate WC. There’s also six cosy bedrooms on this floor, beautiful decor and inviting beds with crisp linens - three double bedrooms, two twin bedrooms which can be adapted to suit your group (zip-and-link), and one twin bedroom.

Outside, there’s a BBQ patio overlooking the loch, where you can relax with morning coffees while children and pup pals enjoy the spacious garden. There’s also table tennis in the garage and fishing boats. There’s a pub, shops, restaurants and amenities nearby in Lairg (7 miles).

Escape the peace and quiet for a day and take a trip to the fantastic waterside city of Inverness, 28 miles from home. Explore the Victorian Market which is steeped in history and houses fabulous independent shops, or for a dose of retail therapy head to Eastgate shopping centre where you can find high street brands to browse. Admire the local architecture and visit St Andrew's Cathedral, built in 1869, or climb 94 steps to the top of the viewing tower at Inverness Castle for panoramic views across the city and beyond. The castle dates back hundreds of years and is awash with interesting and exciting tales.

Sitting on the edge of Loch Ness, spend days wandering the waterside and filling your lungs with fresh Scottish air. The South Loch Ness trail is well worth a roam and you will have fantastic vantage points of some wonderfully remote parts of the Scottish Highlands so be sure to pack your walking shoes and a tasty picnic to whet your appetite. Great house in a fantastic location. Extremely comfortable and well stocked. Full of interesting artworks and knick knacks and history, without being overly precious. We had a wonderful week with family and friends and really enjoyed getting to know the area. Thank you for sharing your home.

There are not that many places an extended family of 12 can hire for a decent holiday in the UK... many are ultra-pale, insipid magnolia nightmares. Shinness was perfect. It is warm and comfy and the eclectic selection of chairs, side tables and bookshelves are very homely. So many wonderful books to read, games for the children, and a roaring fireRead more every night. Walks around the Loch and the woods were magical. The 4 hour round trip to Durness one way and back the other is breath-taking. Hide
