Description

Set in a wonderfully tranquil location away from the road and with commanding views out to sea, Willow Cottage is a charming and recently renovated traditional stonemasons cottage.  Just a very short stroll from a wonderful sandy beach yet within easy access to some of the fantastic walks in the north of the island and some of the many golf courses that Arran has to offer, this cottage would appeal especially to those who enjoy the outdoors.

The house has a great character and a rich history with the sea, with one of the living areas retained in original layout, whilst the upstairs level is entirely new.  Benefitting from two multi fuel stoves, guests to this cottage can look forward to relaxing in front of the fire after a day out exploring the island and all of the attractions that Arran has to offer.

The cottage itself will provide a very comfortable and cosy base from which to make the most of the island, particularly the mountainous region in the north as well as the beautiful sandy beaches on the north west coast.  There are a number of excellent restaurants very close by in the villages of Catacol, Pirnmill and Lochranza.

From this location, the Kintyre Peninsula can also be easily explored by taking a short boat trip from Lochranza.  In particular, Skipness Castle and seafood restaurant is wonderful day trip for all of the family.  Lochranza is also home to Arran’s main distillery and whisky lovers will be able to enjoy some of the samples on one of the many distillery tours. For those interested in historical sites, the King’s Caves in Blackwaterfoot are a series of natural sandstone caves with ancient carvings on the walls.  In addition, the site of the Machrie Standing Stones is just a short drive from the cottage.

    Willow Cottage reviews
This was my first trip to Arran. Needing to get away from city life, I chose Pirnmill/Thunderguy and Willow Cottage looked charming. It also sounded as though there was everything we would need, including a good supply of firewood, should the weather turn out to be rainy and cold. I was set up on a hill a short walk away from the sea. Although Pirnmill beach is a little further down the road (Thunderguy is where we were) there was a lovely little beach at the bottom of the road. We arrived to a neat and tidy house which did indeed have everything we needed. Things of note were the hammock, the lovely selection of books, the two fireplaces, the lovely showers, the heated bathroom floors (a treat when it is cold), the firewood, the views from the upstairs window and the personal feel of the cottage. There was good access to walks, a shop, and we had wonderful food at the local Lighthouse restaurant. Everyone was friendly and it was a lovely place to stay. I would definitely book the cottage again. I reported that a DVD was lodged in one of the players when we arrived, but we weren't that bothered as we used the machine in the main sitting room. I enjoyed the books on Geology and Birds as well as the board games that were there. All in all a lovely time was had by all.

    Mrs Lee - July 2017
We thought this house was brilliant. Comfortable and roomy so good in any weather. Outstanding location, well equipped, log stoves very efficient. Wren sang to us every morning.
    Mrs Robertson - June 2017
Unfortunately we had a bad start, the track up to the cottage, which I appreciate your info does mention is rough, however that is an understatement, a 4xwheel vehicle is really needed; and no directions to where the key box was didn't help. The kitchen in particular was not to the standard of cleanliness I would expect, salad drawers in fridge dirty, breadbin (which I wouldn't have used anyway!) still had old bread in, no spare kitchen cupboards to put any of my own stuff (3 x wall cupboards all full of owners/past guests food products) - I had to decant one cupboard and clean it to use. Worktops - crumbs behind breadbin/toaster etc. Old bits of food around sink taps etc. All in all not good. The bed linen and shower rooms were clean enough. I complained to housekeeping team, and they were very apologetic and offered to come the next day to clean but by then I had to clean dishes, fridge etc to use. Apart from the cleanliness aspect the house itself if so full of owners contents; enough bedding stuffed in the wardrobe (couldn't hang anything there, too full of bedding) and in bags around the 2nd bedroom for about 20 beds!! Every shelf etc covered in owners ornaments, books etc. Just too much for a holiday home, felt very stuffy and claustrophobic! I have some photos if you wish to see them. Shame, it could be lovely if just given a good tidy and clean. If fact, I feel sorry for the cleaner to an extent as there is so much stuff around it must be a nightmare to work in it. Sorry to be so negative, I have had lots of great self catering holidays, home and abroad, but never been to a holiday home like this and have never left negative comments before but felt it necessary on this occasion.
Owners Response: "Thank you for your review and you will be pleased to learn that the road up to Willow cottage has been sorted so no 4 wheel drive should be necessary! I have also removed all that was in the wardrobe . Regarding the cleaning I have spoken to my manager who will make sure this is cleaned up to the standard we expect and do hope you will not have been put off after your bad initial impressions. Thank you again"
    Mrs Young - May 2017
Willow Cottage is well located for walks into the Pirnmill Hills especially to Coire Fhionn Lochan and Loch Tanna. The main bedroom has great views of the coast and Kintyre. New central heating keeps cottage nice and snug. We struggled to get the car the whole way up the drive the first evening, 4-wheel drive would have helped. After that we parked in the parking place and walked up the last bit.
    Mr Bryden - May 2017
It would have been good to have clear instructions on the heating as when we arrived it was v cold and heat was important, soon as we sorted that it was great, the lounge fire was not as good as the middle room so we generally used the middle room. The range of books was very good, geology and wildlife info very welcome, and good maps. Need more good glasses for wine and bubbly.
