Kirkwood Estate is located in Dalton, by Lockerbie, Scotland. It is a ‘real’ working sheep and beef cattle farm but the estate has lots more going on that we are really excited to share with you today. Known for having the second biggest bluebell forest in the UK, Kirkwood Estate is renowned for its wonderful nature and wildlife. The badgers in particular are the magical attraction and during certain times of the year can be seen shuffling through the bluebells on their hunt for worms and other treats in the wilderness.

Along with badgers Red squirrels, deer, otters, hares, foxes and many many birds can all be spotted on your walks and adventures around the area and this is why Kirkwood Estate are starting up the ‘Badgers and Bluebells’ photography course. For years the owners have watched this wonderful array of wildlife on their doorstep and have thought of a way in which others can come and enjoy it for themselves but also take a bit of it home with them in photograph. Anne Smart, the creator, and Laurie Campbell met on a glorious February morning and walked around the grounds pinpointing locations where there will be great opportunity to watch the badgers feeding and at play in the woodland, setting up those perfect shots! The badgers are already active at night time around the setts so come the longer evenings these charismatic creatures will be easily seen.
