This exquisite, unusual property is a converted schoolhouse, which has been lovingly and beautifully renovated. It sits in the Highland village of Muir of Ord, close to the waters of the Beauly Firth and Moray. With two sumptuous double bedrooms, it’s the ideal couples’ retreat in the heart of the Highlands.

The property is a beautiful stone building: a single storey schoolhouse with a miniature tower at one end. The original features of this unusual structure have been thoughtfully preserved and the interiors reflect its history, with antiques and old Scottish details blending with more modern design.

The heart of the home is a large, open-plan space which combines a sitting area, dining table and kitchen, all leading down to the focal point – a stone fireplace with a wood burner – perfect for gathering around and enjoying cosy evenings. With oak floors and beautiful high ceilings, this room really has an impressive feel, and unique pieces of furniture and artwork make it even more special. Head through to the first bedroom, also on the ground level. It’s a king-size room with an en-suite; a luxurious room with its own feature fireplace and rich decor.

Up on the first floor, you’ll find the second double bedroom which hosts a beautiful antique bed and art deco fireplace, making it an inspiring, chic retreat for a couple.

Outside the property, the garden runs down to a wee burn, a little stream. Grass wraps around the house which is secluded by trees, so you’ll enjoy your very own slice of Highland landscape.

  • 2 bedrooms – 1 king-size, 1 small double
  • 2 bathrooms – 1 en-suite shower room with WC, 1 bathroom with bath, separate shower and WC
  • Electric cooker, fridge, microwave, dishwasher
  • Washing machine
  • TV with Freeview, DVD player
  • Wi-Fi included
  • Woodburner - first basket of logs included
  • Enclosed garden with BBQ and garden furniture
  • Private parking on driveway
  • The property is situated by a road but the garden is completely enclosed
  • Unfenced stream runs through the garden, children and pets to be supervised at all times
  • Early arrival available at an additional charge by prior arrangement with the owner
  • Shop, restaurants and other facilities within 0.5 miles
  • This property will be decorated for Christmas
  • Arrival: 16:00 onwards
  • Departure: before 10:00, unless otherwise stated in your arrival details
  • 1 dog allowed. Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week
  • There is an Accidental Damage Deposit of £250 when booking at this property, however this may be waived for £25. We’ll provide more details about this when booking your holiday.

The village of Muir of Ord is a lovely base from which to explore the Highlands. With the village pub just a few hundred metres from your door, a train station that's great for day trips further afield, independent shops and cafes, and a whisky distillery, all within a mile, you can stroll out of the old schoolhouse and enjoy being part of this quintessential Scottish community.

Take a 3-mile jaunt to the meeting point of the River Beauly and the Beauly Firth, which tips towards Inverness and the great body of the Moray Firth. Here you'll find the Beauly Priory, a gorgeous ancient ruin of a church built in 1230, surrounded by an atmospheric graveyard and woodland.

For a dose of city life, just 15 miles away, head over the Kessock Bridge into Inverness where you'll find way more history than you can learn in a single visit, and a vibrant artistic and cultural life to discover. It's also a start point of the Great Glen Canoe Trail, a 22-mile winding stretch along manmade canalways, so if you've still got some competitive energy to spare, why not have a team paddle? Or try a round at one of Inverness' many golf courses.

A beautifully restored property, with many original features and antique extras. Very nice that it hasn't been made too modern. The downstairs bed was soooo comfy, and the shower was great. My partner had trouble filling the amazing freestanding bath. Thanks for a lovely stay.

Fantastic place to stay in the Highlands. We really loved our time here, it's a great location with access to the stunning countryside and walks - plus the beautiful Singleton distillery nearby. We visited with our nervous Nelly dog and it was lovely and peaceful for her even on NYE. Thank you to the host.

Just spent a lovely five days at the old school house. Cottage has everything you would need for a relaxing break. The garden was safe and secure for our dog, he rarely strays out of sight so I felt comfortable letting him enjoy the space. Muir of Ord is a quiet spot, bad girls bakery was a lovely treat and worth a visit.

Lovely cottage. Good size for 4 people. Beautiful main bathroom. Dog friendly but had to keep on lead in garden as he could get through gate. Only problem we had, it was way too hot and although it was the holiday season the owner himself came out and it was sorted.
