Magical, luxurious and truly unique - this restored castle is simply stunning and sure to provide an unforgettable getaway with a group of family or friends.

Plucked straight from a fairytale, yet boasting all you need for a luxury 21st-century stay, you won’t find a holiday home like it here in Scotland. This 14th-century castle lay dormant for years and fell into ruins, until in 2013 the home was renovated to the highest standard. Sleeping quarters are tucked into the spacious turrets, and four compact bedrooms boast plenty of space to sleep eight guests – an ideal family location.

This combination of modern and traditional is well represented in the home’s decor. The owners have thoughtfully decorated with plenty of local materials such as estate harvested wood and local stone, creating a home filled with charming beams and exposed stone walls. The rooms are filled with unique art-deco charm, such as stained-glass windows, colourful wallpapers and soft furnishings. Kids will love exploring the property for hidden secrets, such as tiny carved wood mice and the grazing ‘sheep’ on the sedum and wildflower roof.

The cosy ground floor is the perfect spot to relax after a long day outdoors, with underfloor heating and a warming wood burner ready to welcome you home. Head into the open-plan kitchen and dining space, where a well-equipped, quality kitchen is the perfect space for cooking with local produce, and you can all dine together with wonderful garden views.

Head onto the first floor to find a second cosy sitting area, an excellent place to settle down and watch TV or enjoy a good book. Here, you’ll find large patio doors leading onto a small balcony, an enjoyable space to enjoy morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. The first bedroom is located here on the first floor, and is a cosy twin with connected shower room.

In this unique property you’ll find three further bedrooms, each on an individual floor of one of the castle’s old turrets. These rooms are all cosy, owing to the old nature of the building, but this adds to the wonderful charm. From the second floor, you can take the crenelated stone walkway over to a second turret and find a small, luxurious sauna. Follow the stone spiral staircase up and onto floor five, where you’ll find a unique, circular seating area with porthole windows, perfect for watching the sunset or keeping an eye on the local birds and wildlife.

Outside, the home is surrounded by a bright green lawn, ample room to play a ball game as a family. Make use of the garden furniture to enjoy some al fresco evening drinks whilst keeping an eye on the young ones as they play. Be sure to make use of the outdoor hot tub during your stay, paired perfectly with the unique sauna.

Those looking to improve their game can enjoy tennis on the estate, available by prior arrangement with the owners. If you prefer golf then enjoy the three golf courses within 3.5 miles of the home, one of which is just 1 mile down the road.

The Firth of Clyde waterside is a short 0.5-mile walk from the home, offering remarkable sea views. A more traditional sandy seafront can be found just 3 miles away at the town of Largs, where you'll also find a promenade with cafes and shops. Kids will love learning about the area's Viking history at the multi-media Vikingar! centre (2.5 miles). You may want to take a ferry trip over to the nearby Isle of Cumbrae for an enjoyable afternoon.

As the property lies on the brink of the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, you're never short of an abundance of walking and mountain biking routes. Summit the Hill of Stake (20 miles) for a remarkable view of the Scottish sunset. The park is home to some unique local wildlife, varying throughout the year and making a wonderful day out for nature lovers and outdoor photographers. Families will also love a trip to Castle Semple (18 miles) and a walk around the pretty loch.

As my granddaughter said during our stay "Why would anyone book a hotel when you can live in a castle?" Just wish our stay was longer!

Altogether it was a very disappointing experience. I request at least 50% of the money we paid to be returned. The reasons: - not clean - the carpet is probably 10 years old and is falling apart. A quite fantastic property in a wonderful location. A remarkable transformation, or recombooberation, of a building from ruins to a comfortable, luxurious retreat. The attention to detail is amazing but the overriding feeling is a sense of fun. The owners should be very proud. First rate, while you should expect things such as a tight staircase and put mobile reception, it's a literal castle and it's by far the best castle I have ever stayed at.
