In the centre of the Outer Hebrides, the island of North Uist is home to a landscape of fresh and saltwater lochs, miles of sandy beaches and cultivated crofts. Popular among walkers, bird watchers and cyclists alike, it is connected by a causeway to Benbecula (18 miles), Berneray (10 miles) and Baleshare (12 miles). The island’s main town of Lochmaddy (9 miles) has a shop, cafe, restaurant and community arts centre. Discover the history behind this fascinating island with a visit to the Trinity Temple (12 miles), a historic ruin listed as European significance and thought to be Scotland’s oldest university. Explore the Barpa Langass (11.5 miles), a 5,000-year-old burial chamber or walk the Uist Sculpture Trail, a combination of seven commissioned works found in various locations across Uist and Benbecula. Nature lovers should head for the RSPB nature reserve at Balranald, or venture to the east side of the island for an afternoon of otter spotting. Other wildlife to look out for includes the corncrake, one of Britain’s rarest birds, and Europe’s largest breeding colony of grey seals. Other nearby attractions include the Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre (9.5 miles), Shoreline Stoneware (11 miles) and Uist Community Riding School (19.5 miles).

Beautiful location, ideal for beaches, bird ( eagles and short eared owls) and wildlife spotting ( deer, otter and seals). Ideal spot to watch the Northern Lights . Spectacular. We had a lovely, relaxing stay. Managed to island hop with such ease on the ferries, seeing the contrasting landscapes and wonderful beaches. Our 2 dogs loved it too. The cRead moreottage was so comfortable. It had everything we needed. Cathena was so lovely advising us about the area and making us so welcome. Thank you xxx Hide

The cottage was just perfect for our needs, clean, lots of space, games and cards and well equipped for cooking with a huge garden even better that a great Co-op was next door and a perfect beach a few mins away - would definitely book again.

The perfect holiday cottage. We went for a week and have rebooked for a fortnight next summer. Great to be so handy for both beaches and Co-op. Being able to sit in a sheltered part of the garden and enjoy the late afternoon sun was a real pleasure and when things were a little colder and wetter, the reading nook upstairs was a delight.

We had a lovely week at Sleatabhal. The location is perfect for exploring North Uist and its surrounding islands. Walking from the cottage through the machair to the beach, where we would often be the only ones there, was always memorable. The island is a fantastic place full of history, tradition, wildlife and stunning scenery.

Stunning location and the cottage was excellent. If you want a quiet break with plenty of walking this fits the bill. Hosts and locals were very friendly and we do aim to return at some point.
