Making a charming holiday base for a family or a couple, this light and cheerful cottage provides ample space for four guests looking to make the most of a delightful part of the Scottish Borders. This cosy and relaxing cottage is just a short stroll from the glorious River Tweed where there are plenty of opportunities for salmon and trout fishing. Situated along a quiet country lane in the picturesque village of Gattonside, this lovely period cottage is an idyllic retreat and features a warming wood burner and beautiful rural views.

 

On entering this fresh, bright and friendly period cottage, you will find the welcoming lounge. This is a lovely space to unwind in at the end of a great day exploring the Melrose area, with comfortable seating, a cosy wood burner and TV so you can snuggle up with a favourite movie in the evening. There’s also a selection of books and games to help keep you amused. Crossing into the kitchen/diner, this attractive room has plenty of equipment to help you cook up a storm, as well as an inviting dining area for you to gather, chat and share a fantastic family meal. Heading up to the first floor, there are two colourful bedrooms, each with beautiful countryside views: a lovely double room, and a cosy single room with an additional single pull-out bed. The stylish bathroom is complete with WC and a shower over the bath.

 

Stepping outside, the charming garden is private, with a seating area and plenty of garden furniture so you can enjoy a BBQ or a glass of wine in the evening, while taking in the views of the Eildon Hills or spending the night stargazing. Secure bike storage is available.

Just a mile to the north of the picturesque town of Melrose, the village of Gattonside has a couple of friendly restaurants and makes a great base for enjoying long country walks. To the west is Born in the Borders (2 miles), which offers a fabulous day out with grass sledging, osprey spotting, and a distillery and brewery. A short stroll from Gattonside takes you over the River Tweed by chain bridge and into Melrose, where you will find a wide array of quirky independent shops, restaurants, pubs and art galleries. The town also features the ruins of Melrose Abbey, the Priorwood orchard and the walled Harmony Gardens. The home of rugby sevens, Melrose, is also host of the Melrose Sevens tournament as well as the annual Borders Book Festival. Other local landmarks and attractions include the remains of Dryburgh Abbey, Mertoun Estate Gardens, Mellerstain House and Gardens, Smailholm Tower (all within 10 miles), Hume Castle (14.5 miles) and Abbotsford, the former home of the novelist Walter Scott (3 miles). There are plenty of activities to pursue, including golf, fishing and cycling, and Melrose makes a perfect base for walkers exploring both the Borders Abbey Way and St Cuthbert’s Way. From Tweedbank station (2 miles) you can catch a train for a day trip to Edinburgh. Heading west you can explore the bustling town of Kelso (13 miles), which is famous for its popular racecourse, as well as the magnificent Floors Castle, the 12th century Kelso Abbey and the Borders Events Centre.

Cottage was comfortable with all we required. Garden is dog friendly and good walks nearby with Melrose only 10 minutes walk away.

We really enjoyed our stay - the quiet location and views were excellent, with lots of good local walks. We also had a day in Edinburgh using the train from Tweedbank, and visited the Great Tapestry of Scotland in Galashiels. Lovely cottage in beautiful location. Handy for Melrose town, the Borders and for Tweedbank station (trains to Edinburgh). Very clean and well equipped. Nice welcome basket. We enjoyed our stay very much.

What a lovely find. The cottage is in a geat location with a superb view of the Eilden hills which are great for a walk. It was tucked away in a little hamlet but very quiet and peaceful. The owner provided many little touches that added to our enjoyment of the cottage. Loved the various goodies provided by her which kept us going. We had a very enjoyable and comfortable stay at this lovely cottage. Its situated in a beautiful location a few minutes walk from the River Tweed and a few minutes more to Melrose itself. We would love to visit again.

Karens cute peaceful cottage is spotlessly clean and has all you need for a relaxing break. The views from the windows and garden are stunning towards the Eildon hills. The sound of birds is all that will disturb you! We were down to walk the Borders Abbey Way and to attend events at the Birders Book Festival and Overbutton cottage is great as a baRead morese for both. This is a lovely cottage with great views and a lovely garden. Karen is a fantastic host and attended to everything we needed before and during our stay. The house is great for a dog as the stairgate and enclosed garden are great. Parking in the lay-by on the main road is also easy and less than a minute's walk from the cottage.

A lovely cosy cottage with everything you need. Perfect for us as we were using as a base to visit friends in Melrose which is only a 15 minute walk away. Couldnt park next to the cottage which may put some people off but didnt bother us too much as a parking space found just up the lane. Overbutton Cottage is in the middle of a row of three with a view to die for, looking directly at the middle peak of Eildon Hill. It is clean, comfortable and bell equipped, especially if you like a soft bed. The location means it is quiet at all times of the day. Lovely cottage ,very clean and comfortable. Owner has provided everything you could need for your stay .Lots of little extras provided eggs,milk ,Selkirk bannock and coffee to name a few. Dog bed ,towels and treats for our dog. Very peaceful location and Melrose within easy walking distance and the River Tweed. We loved it here.

Beautiful surroundings - excellent for touring and visiting various sites, Went into Edinburgh one day (did the P&R at Sheriffhall) and had a long day trip to Falkirk wheel and Kelpies - well worth it ; Roslyn Chapel also great as was Floors.
