Meikleour is a pretty village in the Perth and Kinross region, best known as the home of the Meikleour Beech Hedge: planted in 1745 it is the longest hedge in Britain and the tallest hedge in the world. There’s also a charming restaurant and pub in the village, which also makes a lovely base for exploring the pretty Kinclaven Bluebell Woods (3 miles) where you can spot red squirrels, pine martens and great spotted woodpeckers. The nearest main town is Blairgowrie (4 miles) where you will find some great restaurants, cafes, pubs, supermarkets, independent shops, galleries, leisure facilities and a swimming pool. Set on the banks of the River Ericht, Blairgowrie is the starting point of the circular 60-mile Cateran Trail, and is the home of the Blairgowrie and Rattray Highland Games. The former capital of Scotland, Perth is within easy reach (12.5 miles) and rests on the banks of the River Tay. This thriving city offers a wide range of independent shops, pubs, restaurants, art galleries and museums. Featuring two lovely parks, ancient, cobbled streets and medieval spires, this ancient city also features busy weekend markets and is home to landmarks and attractions including Perth Museum and Art Gallery, the Fair Maid’s House and St Ninians Cathedral. Also close to Perth are Scone Palace (11 miles), Stanley Mills (7 miles) and Perth Racecourse (10.5 miles). The friendly village of Dunkeld (10 miles) is home to a majestic cathedral and the Beatrix Potter Exhibition at Birnam Arts.
