Sitting on the waterfront at Kilchattan Bay on the southern end of the Isle of Bute, this beautiful red sandstone church sleeps eight people over four bedrooms and welcomes four canine companions. It may look traditional from the outside, but step inside and you’ll find a stylish holiday home that boasts charm, character and gorgeous bay views at every turn. The perfect accommodation option for families or groups of friends who appreciate a little style and sophistication when they travel, this property is the perfect place to get away from it all and unwind with your loved ones. Spend your days strolling the beach at the front of the property or the woods to the rear, and your evenings sipping wine by the fire pit in this property’s gorgeous garden.

This lovingly-converted church is full of character and style. Tastefully adorned with original features and bathed in natural light, this unique property is a delight to discover. Large church windows, pretty fireplaces, character doorways and impressive ceiling beams add a sense of grandeur to the building, but the plethora of soft furnishings and modern design touches bring the building bang up to date.

Step through the main door and you’ll find a handy cloakroom and shower room – the perfect place to kick off your sandy shoes and jump in the shower when you return from the beach. Next, you’ll find a lovely lounge area with pretty sea views, and a stylish kitchen where you can cook up a storm for your loved ones. This lovely lounge/kitchen leads through to a king-size bedroom. In the next part of the property, you will find a bathroom with a wonderful roll-top bath and a steam room/sauna – a real treat after a day’s hiking around the island. There’s also a king-size bedroom, a double bedroom and a twin bedroom. Next you’ll find the impressive second kitchen/diner, which has extra-high ceilings and original stained-glass windows. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy a special dinner around the large oak table. Leading on from the main kitchen you’ll find a second lounge with a wood burner where you can warm your toes while dinner is cooking. There’s also a nice snug area and a games room with a bar and pool table.

Step outside and you’ll find a garden with two seating areas. Fire up the charcoal BBQ and dine alfresco, or simply gather at the fire pit with a bottle of wine and watch the stars come out. The lawned garden leads up to a walking/cycling trail through the woods. In the front garden, you can take a seat and enjoy gorgeous views of the bay. Roadside parking is subject to availability.

The Isle of Bute is 15 miles long and 5 miles wide, but it’s jam-packed with history, culture and wild beauty.

Enjoy a peaceful stroll at Langalbuinoch Beach (2.5 miles), which sits directly opposite the Isle of Arran. Spot the different layers of volcanic rock that make up this part of the island, and further around the bay you’ll find the vitrified fort at Dunagoil.

Get active and take a sailing lesson or hire a paddle board in Rothesay (7.5 miles), stop to smell the flowers at the beautiful Ardencraig Gardens (7.5 miles), tee-off at Bute Golf Club (1.5 miles), or visit the Victorian mansion of Mount Stuart House (4 miles) - the home of the Earls and Marquesses of Bute.

Foodies love this island. Keep your eye open for the ‘ButeKitchen’ symbol in local restaurants, tearooms and bars – it’s the local mark of excellence. Head into Rothesay (7.5 miles) and treat yourself to some traditional Scottish afternoon tea at the Electric Bakery, taste the smoked salmon and cheese at Ritchie’s of Rothesay (this traditional smokehouse’s products have graced the Balmoral breakfast table), sample the island’s small batch hand-crafted gin at the ‘Gin Garden’ at Isle of Bute Gin, or check out the ‘Heidrun’ whisky liqueur at The Spirit of Bute micro-distillery.

If you love quirky and comfortable then choose this gorgeous converted church, complete with sauna (for 1) and steam shower. It is stunning inside and out and has everything you need for a relaxing holiday, plus the view is to die for. Perfect base for exploring Bute, great pub up the road with great food - bit of a stroll but a 2-minute drive.

We had a fantastic stay at Cattan over New Year as a family of 8 adults and 2 dogs. The games room was such good fun and kept everyone entertained. The kitchen was great, we spent most of our time round the table and even did a loony dook in the sea on New Years Day. Would definitely go back.
