There are some truly spectacular walks to enjoy nearby, including the much-loved Borders Abbeys Way. The long-distance route takes you through historic towns and villages, linking four 12th-century ruined abbeys in Kelso, Jedburgh, Melrose, and Dryburgh.

Floors Castle (6.5 miles) makes a great day out. The 18th-century family home is Scotland’s largest inhabited castle. Wander through its elegant rooms to explore the impressive art collections, before sharing a picnic in the grand grounds overlooking the River Tweed.

Another must for the itinerary is Abbotsford (21.5 miles). At the ancestral home of Sir Walter Scott, you can peruse the poet’s former study and marvel at the magnificent library. Afterwards, take a peaceful stroll around the pretty walled gardens and extensive woodlands.

The picturesque ancient town of Melrose is 19 miles away. Set at the foot of the Eildon Hills, the pretty town has a great selection of cute cafes and restaurants, as well as two stunning National Trust for Scotland gardens.
