Nestled amongst the Aberdeenshire countryside in North East Scotland, this charming lodge is ideal for friends looking for the tranquillity and natural beauty of a rural break. Sleeping four people in two king-size bedrooms, this lodge stands proudly at the entrance to the grand Fasque House and Estate, home of the Gladstone Family. With plenty of walks from your doorstep, you can explore the deer park, woodland and beyond, but be sure to pack your binoculars so you don’t miss the wonderful wildlife that resides here, such as deer, otters, eagles and red squirrels. The estate is situated on the outskirts of the village of Fettercairn, home to some small shops, a pub and the Fettercairn Whisky Distillery, where you can take a tour and enjoy a wee dram.

On entering, discard coats and boots in the porch before heading into the hallway. From here, the cosy lounge is to the right with an open fire – the perfect spot to snuggle on the sofa of an evening. Heading into the kitchen/diner, you’ll find everything you need to cook up a hearty breakfast or evening meal, which can be enjoyed at the dining table. At the end of busy day, head into one of the king-size bedrooms for a good night’s sleep, both of which have feature fireplaces as a reminder of the property’s heritage. A family bathroom completes the accommodation with a shower over the bath.

The garden can be accessed from the kitchen and has dining furniture so that you can enjoy al fresco meals against the backdrop of the beautiful surroundings. You are also welcome to explore the estate’s 400 acres. If you’re looking for an extra special break, a hot tub can be arranged at an additional cost. There is ample parking for up to three cars.

Situated in a peaceful location, this lodge is well-placed to explore the spectacular coastline to the east and stunning Cairngorms National Park to the west. Dramatic and rugged, the coastline has cliffs, golden sand, hidden coves and far-reaching sea views. Head 16 miles to the historic village of Inverbervie with its shops and eateries. Further south, there is the picturesque harbour village of Gourdon (17 miles), where you can enjoy the views while tucking into fish and chips. Heading north, there’s Catterline and Kineff (20.5 miles) that again offer wonderful coastal walks and local pubs.

If you’d prefer to explore the Scottish countryside, head inland to the breathtaking scenery of the Cairngorms. 21 miles away is Loch Lee, which forms part of a delightful (yet challenging) walking circuit that also takes in Glen Esk’s Falls of Unich and Fall of Damff. This is one of many walking routes that allows you to soak up the varied landscape of the National Park.

Laurencekirk (6.5 miles) is your nearest town with a wider range of shops and eateries than Fettercairn. It’s home to mansion house and farm, Balmakewan, which has a tearoom, farm shop and a beer festival. It is a good starting point for walks.

Lovely property, clean and well cared for. Fettercairn is a small village one mile down the road that has a village shop, pub that serves great food and a nice patisserie. Further afield, we enjoyed Stonehaven, Edzell, St Cyrus and Lunan Bay beaches. The Blue door walk is just down the road and is great.

Cottage clean and well equipped. Excellent location on the Fasque Estate for walking dogs. The Arch Cafe in Fettercairn is a most visit. Within easy reach of the beautiful Cairngorms and east coast of Scotland. A few equipment issues during stay. Issues resolved, but could have been completed more timely.

Really enjoyed our stay at the Gate Lodge cottage! Perfect location and access to the grounds to walk in the evenings was a bonus. Recommend visiting local beaches at Montrose, St Cyrus and Lunan Bay. Attractions nearby include Fettercairn distillery (tour with tasting is great), Dun House (the house tour is a must) and Dunnottar Castle (spectaculaRead morer ruins). Highly recommend and worth every penny! Hide
