Located near to the sleepy village of Hutton, situated off a quiet country lane, this is a fantastic base to explore the unspoilt countryside of the Scottish/English border. Drive 7 miles towards the coast and you'll find the medieval town of Berwick-upon-Tweed and many beautiful sandy beaches including Spittal and Coldingham.

Spittal village stands on the south bank of the Tweed and became a seaside resort because of its lovely sandy beach. The Victorian promenade and 'Venetian' pavilion, built in 1928, give the beach a traditional feel and makes it a popular place for a classic beach day. There is also an exciting play park and an excellent splash park area here.

For a cultural stroll, follow the Lowry Trail through Berwick town, via Spittal Point and along Spittal Prom. You can learn about the close involvement and inspiration that the artist LS Lowry developed with the area. Closer to home, at Paxton house, you can try a boat trip on the River Tweed or even fishing. There is also a lovely tearoom and adventure playground, as well as seasonal family activities.

And 15 miles inland, you'll find the town of Coldstream and nearby Hirsel Country Park which offers some of the best bird watching in the region as well as pleasant lakeside and woodland walks, a tearoom and children's playground. Edinburgh is easily accessible by car or train for a day trip. The Berwick-upon-Tweed railway station is just 8 miles away from the cottage and there is a regular train service which takes just over an hour.

Weve just returned from a lovely week at Merse Cottage with our two beautiful dogs. The Cottage was lovely, cosy and well-equipped with lovely large bedrooms and a separate dining room. It offered nearly everything that we needed. A very peaceful, albeit quite remote setting but we really enjoyed the dog-walks that provided. What a lovely cottage in a fantastic location, in a very interesting and someone undiscovered area of the Scottish borders. I dont think we could suggest any improvements to the cottage, very cosy, homely, and well equipped, in a very quiet part of the countryside. Fantastic coastline around St Abbs Hear and we were able to do an easy day trip to ERead moredinburgh and Lindisfarne, as well as lots of walking along the wild and rugged coast. Hide

Lovely rural location and convenient for Berwick, although some of the local B-roads can be a little difficult. Cottage itself clean, well furnished and comfortable. In all respects, it was a lovely stay.

Lovely spot, a bit more remote than I had anticipated, but well set up and equipped and very comfortable. Helen and Steve could not have been kinder and more helpful. Quiet countryside in which to walk along the lanes, with deer, pheasants and hares to be seen and lots of bird life. Berwick-upon-Tweed is in easy driving distance, as are Coldstream,Read more Duns, Kelso and Lindisfarne Island, so plenty to explore Hide

Merse Cottage is in a great geographical location. Not far from Berwick-upon-Tweed and Paxton House and the recent restored Union Chain Bridge are well worth visiting. Walks along the river Tweed and local walk to river Whiteadder all close by.
