This impressive castle, sleeping ten guests and up to two dogs across five bedrooms, is steeped in history. The property has been beautifully maintained and retains many original features, giving it a sense of grandeur and style. Set in its own grounds and 1 mile from the little village of Dalbeattie, in the Urr Valley, it is perfect for a large family or group of friends who want some time and space away from hectic lives in historic and attractive surroundings.

The rooms within this remarkable castle are dashing and atmospheric, retaining many original features such as open fireplaces, exposed beams, colourfully painted walls, and ornately framed pictures that create an authentic and homely feel. This property is living history at its best and includes an option to book the formal banqueting or dining hall for a special occasion.

With its striking period features, the wood-panelled hallway leads you to the wooden staircase to the first floor. On the ground floor, the stone floors and thick tapestry curtains take you into the elaborately decorated drawing room with panelled walls and a huge feature fireplace with an open fire. This room feels almost ethereal, and here you can enjoy time together relaxing on the sofas and easy chairs.

A stone spiral staircase takes you up to a bedroom believed to have once hosted Mary Queen of Scots and beautifully adorned with a king-size four-poster bed. This floor also boasts a bathroom with a beautiful claw-foot bath, perfect for a long soak.

Head up the spiral staircase to the second floor and you will find a second bedroom with a double four-poster bed, printed wallpaper and hanging tapestries. On the top floor, is a double bedroom. Additionally, adjoining the castle and accessed externally are two fully refurbished, king-size bedrooms with tartan decor and furnishings in keeping with the rest of the castle.

Across the courtyard, there is a separate building housing a commercial-style kitchen. Please let us know if you would like to arrange catering as this can be done through the owners. There is also a magnificent banquet hall, with a fire, exposed beams, and stone walls, for you to enjoy a special dinner together; we can book this with the owners before your stay.

The property is set within grounds and gardens with lawns, sunken gardens and a river walk. After a busy day exploring, you can unwind in a private hot tub overlooking the garden. Enjoy sitting out on the patio area for early morning coffee or take your favourite tipple of the evening and watch the stars come out.

A remarkable and unique location. I rented the castle for a long weekend to celebrate my 50th birthday with my family. We had a wonderful, memorable time. I particularly loved cooking on the Aga, meals in the green room, and sitting in front of the fire in the sitting room. Lots of atmosphere and history and interesting things to look at - and no sRead moreign of any ghosts! Hide
