Bring your four-legged companions for a quiet getaway in nature with waterfalls, nature reserves and tranquil lochs on your doorstep during your stay in the sleepy hamlet of Gartness – 16.5 miles north of Glasgow.

On the ground floor of this charming stone-built cottage for two is a welcoming, bohemian-style lounge with bold, colourful decor, a plush sofa, wooden furnishings and a crackling wood burner. Sit back and watch a movie with a glass of wine while Fido curls up by your feet. Cook a meal for your other half in the farm-house style kitchen with wooden worktops, dark cabinets, a breakfast bar and ambient lighting.

Climb the stairs to find the bright double bedroom. Make yourself at home in the comfortable and bright space with contemporary art, a feature stone wall and river views. The shower room is stylish, with a spa-like feel from the light tiling and wooden decor.

Enjoy cosy evenings by the outdoor wood burner while dining alfresco in the sheltered decked garden area, which backs onto the river. Pop open a bottle of bubbly and lay down in the hammocks while listening to the trickling water. There is also bench seating and a BBQ amongst the flower borders and shrubs.

Take your dogs for a walk around the waterfall and rugged rock formations at The Devil’s Pulpit (2.5 miles), or sniff out the ruins of Buchanan Castle (19.5 miles). The edge of the national park is 0.5 miles away, with the RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond 5 miles away and the edge of the largest loch in the country 6 miles away.

Spend your time away hiking in the mountains, trying new watersports, or if you’re feeling adventurous, you could mountain bike in the warmer months or ski during winter. Admire the sweeping views from the top of the 974m Ben Lomond (11 miles) and spot the wildlife in the Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre (11.5 miles).

Delve into the area's heritage with a tour of Loch Katherine, The Falkirk Wheel and the Rob Roy Sites (all within 27 miles). St Maha’s Well is 7 miles away, where you can learn the folk tales – it’s said that the ancient holy well has healing qualities.

Seek out the viewpoints where you can enjoy a picnic with expansive vistas of the mountains and wild Scottish countryside – like Duke’s Pass (13.5 miles).

Gem of a cottage. 'Snug' is the ideal word to describe this property, I was 'as a bug' from minutes of arrival. So relaxing, if you are looking for somewhere to chill, you would be hard pushed to find somewhere better.
