The coast isn’t far away from this rural property, and evenings can be spent dining alfresco in the private enclosed garden while soaking up the countryside views.

Climb four steps to reach the entrance of the Shepherd’s hut and step inside to find a crisp, bright, neutral-toned space with plenty of natural light streaming in through the windows and elegant wooden furnishings. In front of you will be the farm-house style one-wall kitchen where you can cook a meal for two and dine at the table and chairs which look out onto the garden. On your right will be the king-size bed with a swivelling TV so you can enjoy some morning shows with breakfast in bed before starting your day. Underneath the bed is some convenient storage for your belongings. Walk through the wooden door to the left of the hut to find a small shower room.

Settle in for a quiet holiday in a rural location down a country lane in the county of Angus. You’ll be close to the Murton Farm, Tearoom and Nature Reserve, a charming attraction where you can see farm animals like donkeys, stroll around the loch and enjoy a bite to eat. Other great places to explore on your doorstep include Rescobie Loch and Balgavies Loch nature reserve.

If you want a night off from cooking one evening, head to the nearby town of Forfar (3 miles). But this town is more than just a convenient place to stop for food or pick up essentials, it’s also steeped in folk tales and history. It was believed that witches lived here, which you can learn about in the Forfar Meffan Museum. If you're intrigued by this town’s past, dating back to the Stone Age, follow the Forfar Heritage Trail.

Enjoy a special day trip to the coast for a swim in the sea at the golden sandy shores of Monifieth Beach (18 miles) or Montrose Beach (17 miles). The coast is also full of picturesque fishing villages and scenic cliff top walking routes.

For some classic castle visits, head to Guthrie Castle (5 miles) or Glamis Castle (8.5 miles) – a 14th-century chateau-style property that was once the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth.
