This spectacular holiday home enjoys a tranquil setting on the southern edge of the Scottish Highlands. The property sleeps four guests and makes the perfect couples’ retreat or base for a small family looking to get away from it all. Numerous walking trails are accessible from your front door and further afield you’ll find the Angus Glens of Clova, Isla, and Prosen (all within 30 miles). After a long walk, return to your rural abode for an al fresco supper surrounded by nature.

The charming Grade B-listed property forms a wing of a magnificent country house. The holiday home has been decorated and furnished to complement the period of the property, with pretty soft furnishings and antique-style furniture. Each room feels bright and airy, thanks to the neutral decor, large windows, and high ceilings.

On entering the property, you’ll pass a convenient boot room for storing all your outdoor gear. From here, move into the attractive kitchen/diner, with ample worktop space and a large dining table to seat everyone. Whilst you wait for the dinner to cook, curl up in the window seat with a glass of wine. After dinner, relax in the gorgeous lounge to watch the Smart TV in the glow of the wood burner. Alternatively, chill out in the adjacent snug with your favourite book or catch up on emails at the writing desk. This room has a sofa bed and accommodates a further two guests if required.

A winding, wooden staircase leads to the first floor and the two elegant bedrooms. The first bedroom is a double and the second is a super-king-size that can be made up as a twin on request. A large family bathroom completes the upstairs accommodation.

Outside, a vast, lawned garden awaits, bordered by attractive flower beds and mature woodlands. Directly outside the property is a seating area for soaking up the sunshine and enjoying al fresco meals.

  • 2 bedrooms – 1 double and 1 super king-size zip-and-link (can be made up as twin beds on request)
  • 1 bathroom with shower over bath and WC, and 1 separate WC
  • Electric oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge freezer, washing machine, Nespresso Coffee Machine
  • Wood-burner in the lounge - logs supplied

The area surrounding the property is a paradise for keen walkers. At the end of the driveway is the Den of Alyth. This vast woodland has a plethora of tracks criss-crossing the Alyth Burn, as well as a pretty picnic area and children’s play area. Another popular walking route is The Cateran Trail, which passes just north of the cottage. The 64-mile, waymarked route is divided into five stages and follows the old drone roads and ancient tracks of Perthshire and the Angus Glens. Those seeking a challenging hike with spectacular views can take on the mighty Glen Clova.

The historic town of Dunkeld is 16.5 miles away, and offers a great range of shops and eateries. The town is bursting with historic buildings, including the spectacular cathedral and the fascinating, 18th-century ‘little houses’. Just outside the town is the magical National Trust site of The Hermitage, where you can take a walk amongst the towering Douglas firs to the roaring Black Linn waterfall.

Another popular local attraction is Glamis Castle (11.5 miles). Soak up 600 years of Scottish history on a tour of the castle, thought to be the inspiration for Shakespeare’s Macbeth, before unwinding in the immaculate gardens or enjoying a bite to eat in the restaurant which serves locally sourced seasonal produce and ingredients grown within the estate.

We had a lovely comfortable stay at Cateran Cottage in March 24. It was spotlessly clean and very warm. The additional touches in the Cottage made it a real home from home and the hosts Liz and Charlie couldnt have been more accommodating.
