The town of Duns has the air of an old Scottish burgh, with historic buildings and an attractive market square. Duns has a good range of independent shops and eateries, as well as local attractions such as the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum that’s dedicated to the champion racing driver. A gentle climb out of the town, past the site of an old Iron Age fort, takes you to Duns Law, where you can enjoy panoramic views across the town and surrounding countryside.

The cottage is just 13 miles from the coast, where you’ll find many charming seaside towns and villages. The historic harbour town of Eyemouth makes a lovely day out, with its vast, sandy beach, bustling working harbour, and great selection of cosy pubs and seafood restaurants.

If it’s peace and tranquillity you’re after, spend the day exploring the mystical tidal island of Lindisfarne (26.5 miles). The picturesque island is teeming with rare wildlife and remote walking trails, as well as the ancient ruins of a priory and a dramatic castle perched on the rocks. After a long walk, take a pit stop in one of the island’s cute cafes or pubs.

When it comes to walks in the area, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The nearby Lammermuir Hills and the Cheviots offer exhilarating climbs, and you’ll find relaxing waterside routes along the River Tweed. For those seeking a long-distance challenge, the Southern Upland Way passes approximately 7 miles from the cottage.
