This charming country lodge sits within the grounds of a magnificent mansion 8 miles north of the border. Located in the beautiful Esk Valley with historic ‘muckle toon’ Langholm just a couple of miles away, it’s an excellent base for exploring the Borders and Hadrian’s Wall country. After busy days outdoors, kick back in style: complete with smart furnishings and all the must-haves of home, the handsome gatehouse has secluded gardens and promises a warm welcome for a party of six plus three canine companions.
Nestled beneath the imposing Whita Hill on the banks of the River Esk, Langholm is a 17th-century woollen mill town and the first stop on the historic route between Carlisle and Edinburgh. A less-busy B-road follows the river north of town and, a couple of miles along, this gorgeous holiday hideaway sits at the entrance to stately Craigcleuch House.
It may look modest from outside, but within its stone walls the property is chic, stylish and supremely comfortable. The kitchen/dining room is spacious and sleek, with all the essentials for effortless self-catering and a contemporary dining area with elbow room for all. Close by, a handy utility room houses laundry equipment while a boot room has space for drying dogs and outdoor gear, and a selection of games to entertain in wet weather. There’s also a convenient WC here.
When it’s time to unwind, walk along the hallway to the lounge and you can stretch out on comfortable sofas, choose a movie to watch on the Smart TV, and warm your toes in front of the flame-effect fire. Also off the hallway are three dreamy bedrooms – a plush king-size with a beautiful country view, another stylish king-size with views over the gardens, and a cleverly designed third with a bespoke bunk bed, ideal for younger guests. Completing the comfort is a spacious bathroom with a bath and separate shower.
To the rear, the enclosed private garden has a dog-wash area and a furnished patio surrounded by mature planting – perfect for al fresco food and drinks. Wander the woodland areas of the estate and you can expect to see an abundance of wildlife.
