This charming country lodge sits within the grounds of a magnificent mansion 8 miles north of the border. Located in the beautiful Esk Valley with historic ‘muckle toon’ Langholm just a couple of miles away, it’s an excellent base for exploring the Borders and Hadrian’s Wall country. After busy days outdoors, kick back in style: complete with smart furnishings and all the must-haves of home, the handsome gatehouse has secluded gardens and promises a warm welcome for a party of six plus three canine companions.

Nestled beneath the imposing Whita Hill on the banks of the River Esk, Langholm is a 17th-century woollen mill town and the first stop on the historic route between Carlisle and Edinburgh. A less-busy B-road follows the river north of town and, a couple of miles along, this gorgeous holiday hideaway sits at the entrance to stately Craigcleuch House.

It may look modest from outside, but within its stone walls the property is chic, stylish and supremely comfortable. The kitchen/dining room is spacious and sleek, with all the essentials for effortless self-catering and a contemporary dining area with elbow room for all. Close by, a handy utility room houses laundry equipment while a boot room has space for drying dogs and outdoor gear, and a selection of games to entertain in wet weather. There’s also a convenient WC here.

When it’s time to unwind, walk along the hallway to the lounge and you can stretch out on comfortable sofas, choose a movie to watch on the Smart TV, and warm your toes in front of the flame-effect fire. Also off the hallway are three dreamy bedrooms – a plush king-size with a beautiful country view, another stylish king-size with views over the gardens, and a cleverly designed third with a bespoke bunk bed, ideal for younger guests. Completing the comfort is a spacious bathroom with a bath and separate shower.

To the rear, the enclosed private garden has a dog-wash area and a furnished patio surrounded by mature planting – perfect for al fresco food and drinks. Wander the woodland areas of the estate and you can expect to see an abundance of wildlife.

Fabulous cottage in beautiful grounds with all mod cons and added extras. Comfortable bedrooms, a good kitchen diner and cosy lounge. You actually feel the stress melting away when you arrive. Well done and thanks again.

Please book this!! Its quiet, clean and beautifully kept. I had everything I needed and more. The towels were even high quality! We went up for our daughters wedding at Gretna and was able to bring our dogs with us. We were 5 mins away from the local shop and 25 from all others. The cottage is magical and a home away from home. Its setting is idyllic and calming. Good to get away from it all. Lots of wildlife around so dog (always on a lead) loved exploring the grounds and picking up new scents. The cottage is big enough so a group can socialise in separate areas. A beautiful cottage renovated to the highest standard. Kitchen was fully equipped for our stay. Breath taking views all around, fabulous garden with various seating areas, my favourite one the bench over looking the little stream in the garden. Would definitely book again.

We booked this at short notice for a few days away and we were NOT disappointed. The cottage is in a fantastic location, really quiet and peaceful. It is deceptively large with more than enough space. The cottage is superbly equipped and has everything you need. Loved the minimal phone signal, the kids didn't though! The scones were a very pleasantRead more surprise upon arrival and went down well. Our dog also loved the dog treats that were there. Highly recommend to anyone looking for some time away. Hide
