This gorgeous semi-detached cottage is perfect for a family or group of friends to enjoy a rural retreat on the Scottish borders. It is set in the quiet little hamlet of Redpath nestled in the rolling hills between the border towns of Melrose (5 miles away) and Earlston (2.5 miles away). In these two towns, guests will find a good range of shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. Melrose is a particularly interesting place with a strong literary heritage. There’s a busy book festival held there every June. Golf is also very popular in the area with several splendid courses nearby. The countryside all around offers many opportunities for walking with the Tweed and Leader rivers close by and the lovely Eildon Hills. The lively market town of Kelso is 10.5 miles away with its ruined abbey, attractive setting on the river and interesting range of shops. A day trip to Edinburgh to enjoy all the sights and sounds of the city, is also feasible at just 35 miles away and with the reopened Borders railway running a regular service.

The cottage is both elegant and homely throughout with many original features and a stylish design aesthetic. Guests enter up a short flight of stone steps from the road into a wide hallway. The large living room has a traditional beamed ceiling and luxurious sofas gathered around a fireplace and wood burner. The country-style kitchen/diner is a gorgeous space and features slate flooring and a cushioned window seat. This is a lovely sociable space to cook and dine together. Also on the ground floor are a cloakroom and a utility cupboard. A narrow, cottage-style staircase leads up to the first floor and the bedrooms. The master bedroom is a tastefully finished and has a king-size bed with an en-suite shower room featuring underfloor heating. The second bedroom is a pretty, twin room (super-king upon request) with an endearing, sloped ceiling – just mind your head if the beds are made up as a super-king! The bright and spacious family bathroom has a shower over a bath.

Outside guests will find a large and attractive garden, fully enclosed by a hedge and offering lovely countryside views. There is a large lawn with a set of children’s swings and a patio area set with an outdoor table and chairs. This is a wonderfully peaceful location ideal for enjoying relaxed time outside. Children will enjoy playing on the lawn and everyone can gather for meals or drinks in the open air.

A couple of points. The cottage was perishing cold on arrival and with a 6 hour changeover time that was unnecessary. We have never arrived at Coastal Retreat and been so cold. The fire was a problem too as no firelighters were there and no means of chopping wood outside. Equipment was good but non stick pans would be a bonus please. It is a beautRead moreiful cottage and the art and artefacts are amazing. We have booked again for the end of September Hide

We had a wonderful fortnight autumn break at 'Tweedswood' for the third time. The cottage is well equipped, clean and comfortable. It is in a friendly village setting surrounded by lovely countryside with lots of interesting places to visit and explore. Although we are pensioners, the back garden would be wonderful for children with a fort and swinRead moregs. We couldn't use the garden furniture to sit out as it was too cold in November. We would readily recommend this cottage. Hide
