This striking family home is set on a vast country estate in Dumfries and Galloway. The pet-friendly retreat, 3 miles from the village of Ecclefechan, welcomes six guests and boasts large, characterful rooms packed with luxurious touches. You'll be within easy reach of Hoddom Castle Caravan Park, which has a seasonal pub and a golf course.

The former castle gatehouse enjoys a peaceful woodland setting and has an impressive exterior with a fabulous red turreted roof. Inside, the holiday home oozes elegance and grandeur, with high ceilings, period features, and a wonderful collection of luxurious furniture and accessories. Enter the country home into the colourful hallway, where you can store shoes and coats. From here, head through to the bright and spacious lounge, which features a magnificent bay window, wooden floors, and a roaring wood burner. Stretch out on the comfortable, L-shaped sofa to watch the Smart TV, or position yourself in one of the window seats with a glass of wine and your favourite book. The separate kitchen/diner is a sociable space, with everything needed to cater for the group and a stylish dining area with leafy views through dual-aspect windows. Just off the kitchen is a handy utility room. Completing the ground floor is an inviting double bedroom and a contemporary shower room. Upstairs, the remaining bedrooms await. Choose from a spacious double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom featuring a free-standing bath or a characterful twin bedroom with a fabulous circular window seat. Please note that the first-floor rooms have sloping ceilings, and you may experience restricted head height in some areas.

Outside, dine alfresco in the enclosed garden on a summer's evening, listening to the sounds of the birds in the surrounding trees. Guests are also welcome to explore the wooded parkland of the vast estate surrounding the property. Private parking is available for three cars.

We enjoyed this property in an area we have never visited before. It was warm and comfortable even during a large storm. Lots to see in the area and nice walking country.

What a fabulous house. Photos don't do it justice. Although the garden isn't secure for dogs, there are plenty of walks right on the doorstep. A perfect, peaceful, private hideaway.

West Lodge is a lovely, cosy, well-decorated, escape to the country. The property has some quite unique aspects including the gate wheel in the living room.
