Relax with loved ones in this stunning retreat with your own private hot tub and sauna, surrounded by outstanding scenery in this outstanding location in the Cairngorms National park.

For a holiday that is all about spending quality time together, this lodge set in the rural northeast of Scotland is a wonderful base for a family of four. It has two bedrooms – one double, one twin – and two dogs are welcome. There’s plenty on offer in the surrounding area to fill your days with exciting adventures, including walks and trails from the doorstep. In the evenings, the TV/DVD will keep children entertained while adults unwind in the private hot tub and sauna.

Inside, the lodge is spacious and the double-height vaulted ceiling and large windows make the open-plan living space light and bright. The interior walls are entirely wood-panelled, in keeping with the natural landscape, and the rooms are uncluttered. The decor is minimalist and the colour scheme neutral, creating a calming atmosphere for a relaxing stay.

Step into the lounge/kitchen/diner, and once you’ve removed boots and coats, head to the bedrooms for a refreshing shower and change into something more comfortable. The lodge is entirely single storey, so tired feet and paws don’t have stairs to worry about. Soak under a hot shower in your en-suite, or take a seat in the sauna, then head to the kitchen to prepare a home-cooked meal. Gather the family around the dining table for dinner. Once plates have been cleared away, play a game or curl up on the sofas for a film night. Afterwards, enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep and wake to spectacular countryside views.

Under cover of the eaves, spend an evening in the hot tub and stargaze when the sky is clear. On warm summer days, dine alfresco on the outdoor table and seating.

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

For a family meal out, the Glen Clova Hotel is only 1 mile away from the lodge. You can find more options in the nearby town of Kirriemuir (14.5 miles), where there are pretty cafes and popular takeaways to choose from. While there, rediscover the magic of Peter Pan with a visit to beloved writer J. M. Barrie’s birthplace, and then children can fly away to Neverland and sail with pirates in the Peter Pan Park.

Set off on a walk through the beauty of the Cairngorms National Park from the Glen Doll Ranger Centre (5 miles). There are moderate trails to suit different abilities and one of the waymarked routes will take you to Corrie Fee National Nature Reserve, a natural amphitheatre carved out by ice.

Further afield, drive to Forfar Loch Country Park (17.5 miles) with a picnic and your binoculars. Walk the 2.5-mile circuit around the loch and see who can spot the most local wildlife, which includes deer, otters and foxes. Glamis Castle (18.7 miles) is a fantastic family trip with choices for how to spend your day; take a tour of the castle and hear stories from your guide, explore the various gardens including the spooky Macbeth Trail, before picking up souvenirs of your holiday in the gift shop.

From the isolated and peaceful Shetland Islands in the north to the thriving border towns and cities in the south, across wild mountains and serene lochs, and encompassing over 700 islands, Scotland’s rich and dramatic landscape simply must be seen to be appreciated. Scotland is home to the ten highest mountains in the UK – including Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak – and is bordered by three seas, offering epic scenery unlike any other you may have seen.

Whether you choose to explore the Highlands, lowlands or islands, lovers of the great outdoors will be thrilled by the stunning Scottish landscapes where some of the rarest UK wildlife can be glimpsed, including golden eagles, dolphins and whales. Take a road trip on the North Coast 500, Scotland’s version of Route 66, to experience the sheer beauty of the land’s wilderness or, as Scotland is the home of golf, either tee off at one of the 550 courses across parkland, heathland and links courses.

Scotland is also a land of unique culture where the people are renowned for their incredible warmth and hospitality. Experience the peaceful Isle of Lewis where Scots Gaelic is widely spoken, or immerse yourself in the cosmopolitan cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen which are vibrant with thriving arts scenes, delicious restaurants and bustling nightlife. And no trip to Scotland is complete without exploring the castles and distilleries: learn about clan rivalries or bloody battles amongst 13th-century battlements or try a taste of Scotland itself during a tour of one of the 120 whisky distilleries. Pure Scottish culture in a glass.

With so many beautiful places to visit and things to experience, a break to Scotland should not be missed. Our fantastic Scottish holiday cottages will ensure a truly memorable getaway. Whether it’s a dog-friendly countryside cottage for two, or a vast and resplendent castle for the entire clan on a tranquil island, we have a holiday in Scotland to suit everyone.
