Budding geologists will enjoy learning about the island's significant rock formations, now designated a protected UNESCO Geopark. From impressive sea stacks to ancient lava flows, the island's geological past is fascinating.

Wildlife flourishes on the island. Don't miss the impressive sight of the puffin colony at the Hermaness nature reserve (11 miles). Around 50,000 pairs of birds inhabit several miles of land, making it a truly breathtaking sight. Slightly further north lies the most northerly islets of the British Isles - Muckle Flugga and Out Stack – watch out for dolphins, killer whales, and porpoises in the water.

The island's Viking past is evident at Haroldswick (9 miles), where you can visit a reconstructed Viking Longhouse and a replica ship. Other longhouses have been excavated across the island, including at Hamar, Underhoull and Belmont. Self-guided trails are available for those who would like to learn more.

The cottage is absolutely gorgeous. Very cosy, very comfy and equipped with everything you could possibly need. The views are stunning. We saw seals in the bay every day and I was very lucky to photograph the Aurora Borealis from right outside the house on 2 evenings that we were there. It was great value for money and I would highly recommend it.

Fantastic holiday, a real get away from it all and switch off break. Curled up in front of the log burner with a whisky of an evening was perfect. Cottage was everything we could have asked for, peaceful with great views over the sea and islands. Very well equipped and everything we needed for our time there. Superb place; the location - above the bay - is perfect. Unst has many charms, and this has to be one of the best located houses there. It is very tastefully decorated, with many thoughtful touches, and is very well equipped. The owner was superb with contact. We are already working out when we can return!

What an amazing place. Beautiful cottage, tastefully decorated with all you need for a truly relaxing break. The views across the bay are spectacular, with seals, otters and fantastic bird life. Fly fishing which is 10 minutes away is excellent and there is plenty of sea fishing from the beach and rocks if you want.

Characterful cottage in a stunning location. Beautiful views. The cottage was very comfortable and clean, though you need to be able to duck down through some of the doorways. We found it to be an excellent location for exploring Unst and Yell.

A lovely and remote cottage for two - old fashioned from the outside, but superbly renovated on the inside, including many nice touches and decorations. Only sheep as direct neighbours - the next houses are quite some distance and no problem, even when occupied. A number of walks can be taken directly from the house, including viking age and other Read moreruins. Exploring the rest of Unst was perfect for one week. Hide
